Every February it happens...the Oscars. I remember the days when I used to attempt to watch all the nominated movies. Ah, remember those days when we had disposable income. Long gone. But, that's okay, we still love watching the show and the pre-game show. The pre-game show in our house is the hours and hours of red carpet analysis that happens before the show begins. Just like the Superbowl pre-game show, we watch the Oscar pre-game show. This year we'll be snacking on crackers and cheese while watching...I discovered this easy and delicious recipe for crispy homemade crackers. These crackers would be perfect for any Oscar party...with kids or without. Grab some cheese and a few grapes and you have a lovely cracker and cheese tray to take out to an Oscars party.

Oscar Night Thyme Crackers

* makes 4 dozen crackers *

(adapted from Martha Stewart)

2 cups all purpose flour

3 tbsp chopped fresh thyme

1 tsp sugar

3 tbsp cold, unsalted butter

1 cup heavy cream

1 large egg white

1. Combine flour, thyme, sugar and salt in a large bowl.

2. Cut in butter, with fork or pastry cutter, until resembles coarse meal.

3. Add the heavy cream and stir with a fork until dough forms.

4. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface...divide dough in 4 sections and shape into squares...wrap in plastic wrap....chill for 1 hour.

5. Once chilled roll out into rectangle on a lightly floured surface...roll as thin as you can.

6. Transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet, score with a sharp knife...creating 2" X 2" squares...brush with lightly beaten egg white.

7. Bake in a 375F oven for 15-20 minutes...until golden brown.

8. When you remove the crackers from the oven snap or cut the squares out and let cool completely on a cooling rack.

9. Store in an air tight container for 1 week.

Yep, these crackers are crisp and light. If you like, you can add a quick shake of course salt to the crackers right before you pop them in the oven. I also made a batch of crackers without thyme, for a little variety. These crackers are perfect for hanging with my family watching the Oscars, but they are lovely enough to take to a friend's house with some gourmet cheeses.

Will you be watching the Oscars this weekend? What will you be snacking on while you watch the show?
