The Michigan State Spartans are no stranger to receiving the top recruits but I think it’s safe to say that head coach Tom Izzo is very excited and happy with his latest addition. According to reports, Versailles (OH) 2015 shooting guard Kyle Ahrens has committed to Michigan State. He reportedly committed last night during his visit and he made it official when he announced it on Twitter. Ahrens now joins Muskegon (Mich.) elite big man Deyonta Davis who is also part the Spartans’ 2015 recruiting class.

Ahrens holds offers from Butler, Dayton, Boston College, Dayton, Xavier, Cincinnati and Iowa but after visiting Michigan State for the fourth time on Thursday, Ahrens decided there was nowhere else he wanted to be other than East Lansing.

“Every time I was there, I always had the right feeling and I fit in so well.” Ahrens told Mike Wilson of Scout.com

According to Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press, Ahrens even played in open gym with some of his future Spartans during his Thursday visit.

He played open gym Thursday on a team with Denzel Valentine and Matt Costello, the two players he said he connected with most on his MSU visit. Also on the team, Ahrens said, was Cleveland State transfer Bryn Forbes, who could land with the Spartans soon.

The other team, Ahrens said, included Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, former Oakland U. star Travis Bader and 2016 big man Nick Ward of Gahanna, Ohio. Ahrens said Ward received an offer from MSU on Thursday.

The three-star recruit certainly does fit well with Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans. At 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, he is obviously very long and athletic but he also has a great jump shot that he can hit from both mid-range and three-point range consistently. Besides that, I like the fact that he is very versatile and is adaptable to any situation. During his high school career, he has shown the ability to play at numerous position and play at a high level on a consistent basis.

I also like the fact that Ahrens isn’t a stranger to facing adversity and overcoming obstacles. Back in December of 2013, Ahrens broke his leg during game when he landed awkwardly coming down from a dunk, ending his junior season.  He was averaging 24 points per game up until that point.  However, just like a true champion, he didn’t let it stop him. He returned to the AAU scene in late April with his team, King James Shooting Stars.

While Ahrens told the Detroit Free Press that he is only “85%” healthy now, he feels he should be ready-to-go by his senior season.

One thing’s for sure, Michigan State is developing a great 2015 class, I can’t wait to see who they add to their arsenal next.
