We are searching for a Registered Respiratory Therapist – someone who works well in a fast-paced hospital setting. In this position, you may be required to deliver respiratory care services to patients in all areas of the hospital (e.g., intensive care units, medical and surgical floors, emergency departments, post-anesthesia care units, infant nurseries, and the home care environment). The therapist must be able to adapt to the particular area of duty assigned and must be able to perform special duties required by the assignment. Specific therapists are also trained to provide respiratory therapy services outside of the hospital setting during critical care patient transports.

The RRT may be required to supervise and be responsible for the work of other respiratory care practitioners. The therapist may also be assigned orientation and in-service education responsibilities as well as be asked to function in the role of mentor for students of respiratory therapy participating in clinical rotations at Children’s of Alabama.

The RRT works under the technical supervision and clinical guidance of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators. Direct administrative supervision is provided by the area Respiratory Care Manager and the Respiratory Care Department Head.

The RRT carries out assigned duties and responsibilities according to policies, procedures, and guidelines approved by the Medical Directors of the department. Standards of performance for the area to which the individual is assigned must be maintained.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Select, review, obtain, and interpret data

In any clinical setting, the RRT selects and reviews existing clinical data and collects or recommends obtaining additional pertinent clinical data

Review patient records and recommend diagnostic procedures

Collect and evaluate clinical information

Perform procedures and interpret results

Determine appropriateness of and participate in developing and recommending modifications to respiratory care plans

Select, assemble, and check equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness

In any patient care setting, the RRT selects, assembles, and assures cleanliness of all equipment used in respiratory care

Assure equipment cleanliness by determining and performing appropriate disinfection or sterilization technique

Perform quality assurance procedures for the department laboratory instruments

Ensure proper function or follow established procedures to correct or report malfunctions of diagnostic and monitoring equipment, mechanical or artificial ventilation equipment, gas metering devices, and any other respiratory care related equipment

Initiate, conduct, and modify prescribed therapeutic procedures

In any patient care setting, the RRT evaluates, treats, monitors, and records the patient’s response to care

Reviews the patient records and communicates with other health team members

Initiates, conducts, and modifies prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve the desired objectives

Provides care in emergency settings, assists the physician, and conducts pulmonary rehabilitation

Explain planned therapy and goals to patient in age-appropriate terms to achieve optimal therapeutic outcome and protect patient from nosocomial infection

Evaluate, treat, monitor, and record patient’s response to respiratory care

Conduct therapeutic procedures to maintain a patent airway

Make necessary modifications in therapeutic procedures based on patient response

Assist physician to initiate and conduct pulmonary rehabilitation

Maintain level of professional competence and clinical knowledge

Complete the competency assessment program in the department orientation manual on initial hire, including self-assessment

Inform coordinator anytime the need is perceived for review or update to enhance clinical competency or clinical knowledge

Complete the requirement of continuing respiratory care education hours to maintain licensure within the two-year renewal period

Maintain BC LS, AC LS, PALS, or NALS certification as required

Complete all hospital required annual in-service education as required

Complete annual competency assessment and validation requirements (skills labs)

Perform defined responsibilities as shift leader when required

Utilize equipment and supplies efficiently

Assist in the orientation and continuing education of new employees as required

Participate in the continuing education of physicians, nursing staff, respiratory therapists and other ancillary personnel as required

Function as a mentor for respiratory therapy students

Participate in the education of patients and their families, including discharge training and asthma education

Skills & Requirements

The practitioner must be a graduate of an American Medical Association-approved 2 or 4 year program of respiratory therapy

The practitioner must have a minimum of one-year experience in the field of respiratory therapy

A minimum of six months of intensive care unit experience is preferred

The practitioner must be licensed by the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Care

The individual must be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care or must be eligible for registry and sit for and pass the registry examination within a specified amount of time
