CHARLES CITY, Iowa- For many local school districts, Friday marked the last day of school before summer break.

Charles City Middle School finished it’s last day of the school year on Friday, but it’s also middle school students last day at the current middle school. In August of 2016, 5th-8th grade students will start at the new middle school.

Dana Sullivan, seventh grade math teacher, said the new location is going to include a lot of new areas to study. “Little corners that they can use to go into, caves and camps and a tree house they can study in.”

Sullivan said the changes will allow many options and opportunities for teachers and students.

Each student will be provided their own Chromebook and students will also have new open classroom concepts, allowing teachers to teach together.

“The whole class, I think, is going to be learning and the teacher will come up and teach and you’ll have one big learning area,” said Maya Hruska, 6th grader. “There’s different classrooms if you need to work on a lab experiment with a friend.”

Sullivan said students will be able to take charge of their own learning. “(Students will) be able to set their own pace and motivate themselves to learn things that are important to them that they’ll need for the rest of their life.”

The current building at 500 N Grand Ave. will be used as a non-profit as well as apartments.
