Lonely Planet Names The Kimberley One of 2014’s Top 10 Regions

Lonely Planet has chosen The Kimberley as one of the world’s Top 10 Regions for next year in LONELY PLANET’S BEST IN TRAVEL 2014, published today.

BEST IN TRAVEL 2014 is Lonely Planet’s ninth eagerly-awaited annual collection of the best trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the upcoming year.

The Kimberley is ranked second on the book’s list of Top 10 Regions 2014. “It’s one of the most sparsely populated regions on the planet and one of the most starkly beautiful,” Lonely Planet says, “carved by giant gorges, dimpled with deep, cool pools, and home to a coastline that could make Australian east-coasters weep.”

“How long this area will remain below the radar is up for debate,” the book adds. “Last year the resources-rich Kimberley narrowly missed out on becoming the site of one of the largest natural-gas projects to be given government approval in Australian history. Explore the area now, before big business encroaches further.”

Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Regions 2014 are:

1. Sikkim, India

2. The Kimberley, Australia

3. Yorkshire, UK

4. Hokuriku, Japan

5. Texas, USA

6. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe & Zambia

7. Mallorca, Spain

8. West Coast, New Zealand

9. Hunan, China

10. Ha’apai, Tonga

BEST IN TRAVEL’s recommendations are drawn from hundreds of ideas submitted by Lonely Planet’s staff, authors and community of travellers, bloggers and tweeters. Their suggestions are then refined by a panel of in-house travel experts, based on scores for topicality, excitement, and that special x-factor. Lonely Planet’s focus is on the merits of each destination and the unique experiences they offer travellers.
