CARPETS

Carpet Styles

Different carpet fibres have unique characteristics which determine the price and performance of a carpet. Carpet should be chosen according to the best style and texture for an installation. For example, tight low loop carpet will offer minimal pile distortion and look better in high traffic areas than a chunky large loop. Remember that expensive, luxurious carpet is probably not the best performer in high traffic areas.

Loop Pile

Loop pile products maintain exceptional appearance since there are no exposed yarn tips and only the sides of the yarn are exposed to wear and stress. In general, loop pile carpets stand up to heavy traffic better than cut pile carpets.

Level Loop

Loops of yarn of uniform height, which wear well and tend to hide footprints. Multi-level loops. Multi-level loop carpeting, possibly created from chunky yarn, gives a more textured or ‘berber’ appearance.

Cut Pile

Cut pile is the most desired type of construction and is suitable for most areas of the home.

Velvet

Dense construction and low pile height, with fibres tightly twisted and close together to create a rich, smooth velvet surface.

Saxony

A variety of level cut pile styles with distinct upright tufts. These may vary in appearance from loose to dense constructions in a range of pile heights.

Frieze or Hard Twist

A cut pile where the yarns are twisted and heat-set in position, which helps hide footprints and vacuum marks.

Shag Carpeting

Longer pile with a shaggy appearance.

Cut Loop

This has a sculptured appearance, created by cutting some loops and leaving others uncut.

Texture

Carpet surfaces absorb or reflect light in different ways according to their construction and the finishing process applied to their tufts or pile. This can significantly change their appearance.

Design

Carpet design is a combination of colour, pattern and texture. Modern contract carpets offer virtually unlimited options in this respect, from plain, discrete finishes to exciting, vibrant ones which enhance their surroundings.

Even extreme design effects can be achieved without any loss of wear performance and long-term appearance retention.

Carpet Fibre Types

From the luxury of wool to the latest sixth-generation nylon yarns, the different types of fibre used to make a carpet have an impact on the performance of your carpet and its suitability to different areas of your home.

Nylon

Nylon fibres provide excellent resilience and abrasion resistance, are exceptionally colourfast and can be dyed into a wide variety of rich colours. Nylon is resistant to staining when treated with a stain-resistant repellent. Today’s greatly improved ‘treated nylon fibres’ enable easy removal of soil and most common household food and beverage stains through professional cleaning.

Polypropylene

Naturally stain- and fade-resistant, polypropylene BCF is the fastest growing carpet fibre, now representing more than 60% of all fibres used in the South African carpet industry. Because the fibre is naturally moisture-resistant, it is dyed during the extrusion process. Polypropylene is most commonly used in loop pile constructions and offers exceptional value for money.

Polyester

Polyester carpets are popular for their bulkiness, softness and colour clarity as well as their excellent stain- and fade-resistant properties. Polyester offers consumers the highest possible combination of performance and value.

Acrylic

This is a widely used synthetic fibre in carpeting. Providing the characteristics and feel of a wool carpet, but at a significantly reduced price.

Wool

About 1% of the carpet market consists of products made with wool fibre. Wool has excellent aesthetic properties, and even though modern synthetic fibres offer superior performance, they have not fully achieved the natural patina of wool. Although wool does not have the resistance to abrasion or moisture absorption that synthetic fibres do, it does clean well and therefore ‘ages gracefully’. Wool carpets are the most expensive.

Blends

Different fibres can be mixed to create carpets with various qualities in performance and style. A particularly good blend is 80% wool mixed with 20% nylon. More modern blends combine polypropylene with nylon.

Eco-Friendly Carpet Innovations

The carpet industry has been hard at work developing eco-friendly carpeting, made partially from post-consumer recycled polyester.

These innovative “green” carpets offer all the advantages of regular carpets while making our planet a better place.

Eco-friendly underlays are also available such as:

Van Dyck Carpets Eco-Lay

Manufactured using the finest recycled rubber

Not air-filled, therefore will not “collapse”

Fully recyclable

Unaffected by moisture

Provides thermal insulation

Retains appearance, even in high traffic / heavy duty areas

Anti-allergenic

Easy and lightweight to transport and fit

The Benefits of Carpeting

Carpeting has many proven benefits that you may wish to consider when choosing a floor covering for your home.

Safety

Carpets are soft and resilient and provide a safe, non-slip surface underfoot for children and the elderly. With injuries due to falls a prominent feature in worldwide accident statistics, it makes sense to choose a floorcovering that provides a measure of protection and minimises the risk of injury.

Health

The dust-trapping properties of carpeting not only reduce the need for sweeping and dusting, but make carpets more hygienic than other floorcoverings because dust acts as a carrier for germs, allergens and other contaminants. Research has proven that textile floorcoverings actually REDUCE the incidence of asthma and allergic reactions, if vacuumed regularly with an efficient vacuum cleaner.

Insulation

The dense pile of a carpet and its backing layer act as heat insulators. The carpet fibres trap small air pockets that retain heat longer, so not only does a carpet feel warmer and more comfortable underfoot than a smooth floorcovering, it helps a room retain as much as 10% more heat.

Affordability

Modern synthetic fibres make today’s carpets about the most affordable and stylish floorcovering choice you can make. With the variety of colours, patterns and textures available, the decor and design possibilities with carpeting are endless and its sheer softness, elegance and comfort make it ideal for all areas of the home.

Sound Absorption

Carpets are simply the best at absorbing sound and creating a relaxing environment in your home. Carpeting virtually eliminates impact noise, as this is absorbed almost immediately, ensuring that the ‘life’ of noises in a carpeted environment is only half as long as one where smooth floorcoverings have been used.

Easy Maintenance

Carpet is a practical, hardwearing and resilient floorcovering choice, with a surface that doesn’t scratch, scuff or splinter. It is easy to install, easy to clean and requires minimum effort to maintain. The cost of maintaining your carpet is also relatively inexpensive when compared with many smooth floorcoverings.

Durability

Today’s modern fibres and technologically advanced construction methods mean that carpets are looking better and lasting longer than ever before. Most manufacturers of quality carpets back their products with comprehensive guarantees and warranties that will offer you the most important decor consideration of all – absolute peace of mind.

We stock a wide range of patterns and styles from all the major manufacturers.

LAMINATES

Laminate consists of a decorative surface which is protected by a wear-resistant layer above it, and strengthened by a sturdy fibre backing.

Laminate flooring products can be manufactured to look like surfaces such as granite and wood, but at a much lower cost. Laminate floorcovering is usually more realistic than vinyl when it comes to replicating natural materials. Padding can be placed beneath laminate flooring for extra comfort.

Benefits

Easy to install.

Can often be laid directly over existing flooring, which saves time and money.

Easy maintenance.

Superior durability.

Sustained look and feel.

Most laminate flooring is manufactured with a ‘wear layer’ which protects it against most scratches, scuffs and stains.

Care:

Cleaning and maintenance of laminate floorcovering is easy!

A mop with an ammonia-based floor cleaner will remove dirt and leave a shine. Vacuum the laminate floor before mopping if there is soil that needs to be removed. There is no need to polish or wax laminate flooring, and it should not be buffed or sanded as this will damage the surface.

DIY for Laminates

Installation do’s and don’ts

DO

Ensure that your subfloor is flat, dry, and smooth

Use an underlay to lessen laminate floor ‘echo’

Install your floor per the manufacturer’s instructions or hire a professional to install your floor if you are unsure how to proceed

Acclimatize boards for 48 hours before installation

Inspect boards for defects before installing

Leave an expansion gap of a minimum of 10mm around the room perimeter and at room transitions to allow space for the floor to move during temperature changes

In kitchens, to create greater water resistance in the seams of your floor, run a small bead of waterproof glue in the groove before clicking the planks together and wipe off any excess before it dries

Keep extra boards in storage for minor repairs down the road

DON’T

Install in consistently wet areas such as bathrooms and laundry room

Install over carpet

Treat or seal your floors after they are installed unless otherwise indicated by manufacturer’s instructions

LUXURY VINYL TILES

Luxury Vinyl Tiles are designed to give you the aesthetic appeal of real wood whilst giving you all the benefits, these include easy installation, easy cleaning and maintenance all without any moisture related complications.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles are perfect for the lounge, dining room and even your bedroom due to their sophisticated elegant appeal. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are available in various styles and textures.

NATURAL FLOORINGS

WHY CHOOSE NATURAL FLOORING?

AVAILABILITY

Natural Flooring is a specialist product, and is not handled by every TCF member. In addition, availability via importers can be a cause of frustration.

COIR

Coir is the rich, coarse fibre extracted from the husk of the coconut palm. It is water-resistant with natural shock-absorbing qualities.

There are two main types of coir fibre that are distinguished by their age when harvested:

White coir fibre, from immature husks, is smoother and finer.

Mature brown coir fibre has added strength and a familiar hue.

Applications

Coir’s strength and coarse texture is appreciated in a number of practical applications including brushes, sacks and hard-wearing coir rugs where the quality of coir fibre is often blended with other natural fibres.

Environmental Impact

Though coir fibre only accounts for around a third of coconut pulp, the remaining two thirds, including the pith, can be recycled as soil treatments and mulch that are completely bio-degradable.

India and Sri Lanka account for around 90% of the 250,000 tons of coir fibre produced globally each year. Coir prices continue to play an important role in the economic prosperity of a number of countries throughout the developing world.

SISAL

Many people love sisal flooring because it tends to be very durable, takes colour well, and requires little care except for regular vacuuming.

Sisal flooring is typically lower in price than some other fibre carpets, and it is resistant to static electricity, so it won’t attract dirt.

SEAGRASS

Seagrass is the least expensive and most versatile of natural floorcoverings. It comes from the coastal regions of China and India and is grown in paddy fields.

Seagrass area rugs are relatively non-absorbent and hard. They are stain resistant and dirt is easily brushed loose from them. Seagrass arearugs have a non-porous surface that gives it a naturally smooth texture and sheen quality. Its rigidity gives it natural durability. Seagrass rugs compliment a low dust, allergy free, naturally humid environment.

PORCELAIN / CERAMIC TILES

Tiles add an elegant touch and are easy to clean and maintain. Thanks to the wide variety of colours, sizes and textures available, you can match the ideal tiles to virtually any room.

Monocuttura Ceramic Tiles

This is the most popular and widely used type of tile for most floor and wall applications.

Many finishes (matt, gloss, satin/sheen, patterns, slip-resistant surfaces, etc.) can be achieved during the glazing process by adding specific ingredients either onto or into the glaze.

Porcelain Tiles

Currently, only imported products are available on the South African market. These tiles are extremely dense with a low degree of water absorption. They are hard wearing, and thus more expensive than Monocuttura Ceramic Tiles.

There are three categories of porcelain tiles:

Full body unglazed – where the colours are obtained by dispersing mineral oxides throughout the bisque. Suitable for heavy traffic areas and industrial applications.

Polished porcelain – as above, but the surface is “polished” to create a gloss appearance.

Glazed porcelain – the tile is glazed to obtain specific finishes/effects.

Note: When purchasing porcelain tiles, due to the density of bisque a better quality (higher bond strength) of adhesive is required for laying of tiles.

Porcelain tiles, due to their density and low water absorption properties, are suitable for areas in sub-zero temperatures.

Clay Tiles (Extruded or Pressed)

Often loosely referred to as Terra Cotta (meaning Earth Fired), these can be glazed but are generally produced as a rustic, slip-resistant floor covering.

Today ceramic tile manufacturers copy the look of Terra Cotta tiles in glazed form, which does not require the regular maintenance of unglazed clay tiles or sealant application and thus are easier to clean and maintain.

Slates & Sandstones (Natural Stone Products)

These are mined and cut to size. Natural stones, slates and sandstones come out of the ground and are 100% natural, so no two tiles or colours will be identical.

VINYL FLOORING

Vinyl flooring is available as tiles or sheets and offers a wide range of colours, patterns and styles.

It can be manufactured to replicate surfaces like granite, limestone, marble and wood to provide the desired look and feel without the demanding maintenance and high cost that such floorcoverings require.

Benefits:

Durable

Easy to install

Impervious to many stains

Reduce noise and help control temperature

Easy to maintain, with good damage resistance

Ideal for high-traffic areas or those prone to moisture and spills

Care:

Vinyl flooring is easy to maintain. Weekly sweeping and mopping will keep it looking good.

WALL EXPRESSIONS

Wall Expressions wall tiles offer unlimited design flexibility (can be used as accents on the wall or ceiling). The felt absorbs sound, improves acoustics and indoor air quality and the tiles are very easy to install.
