Charity supporters enjoying the cake sale at Sugar Café in Rathmore

THE organisers of the Bru Columbanus cake sale fundraiser, held at the Sugar Café in Rathmore, would like to thank all the people of the parish, East Kerry and Duhallow areas for making the event such a tremendous success.

Over €8,000 was raised for the Bru Columbanus Home from Home charity which provides accommodation for families who have members needing treatment in any of the Cork city hospitals.

Katie Cremin has issued a special word of thanks to Tonya and her staff and helpers who organised the whole event.

Carnival: Gneeveguilla Carnival weekend will be held on September 4-6. The Friday evening will commence with the county championship minor team of 1985 playing the club’s current minor team. There will be music in the hall afterwards by The Handy Pack.

Saturday will see a senior game for the Noel O’Sullivan Cup at 6.30pm followed by camel racing at 8.30pm with a tote in operation.

Sunday is Lá Le Club and it will bring the Paddy O’Leary Shield under 10 competition as well as a baby show and fancy dress party at 12.30pm.

A full selection of amusements will be on site throughout the weekend and everyone is welcome.

Deaths: Sympathy is extended to the relatives of Richard Nolan, Ballydesmond and Clounts, Rathmore; Trish Creagh McLarnon, Knocknageeha, Gneeveguilla and Terry Cahill, Rathmore, Stillorgan and Fermoy. May they all rest in peace.

Comhaltas: The All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Competitions took take place in Sligo. Congratulations and well done to everyone from this area that took part as they did branch proud. Bringing back silverware were Mark O’Leary, Sliabh Luachra dancers and our set dancers dancing with Raecaol in the senior mixed set.

Thanks: The Rathmore committee of the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl wish to acknowledge and sincerely thank the families who hosted the children and the two interpreters, Natasha and Zena, and all who cared for and entertained the children during their summer holiday to our parish in July.

During their visit there was a cake sale after both weekend Masses and thanks and gratitude to all who baked and bought cakes and gave donations. Thanks also to the management for the use of Teach Iosagain.

The next fundraiser will be the fashion show which was such a success last year. Keep Thursday, October 1 free in your diaries. Watch this space for more details nearer the time.

Wedding: Congratulations to Margaret Kelleher. Shinnagh Upper, Rathmore, who married Michael Milner, Dunmanway and Killarney, last Friday. We wish them a happy and long life together.

Finals: The very best of luck to the Rathmore/Gneeveguilla Community Games boys’ under 13 basketball team who are representing Kerry and Munster in the national finals in Athlone next weekend. Ciarrai Abu!

Classes: Set dancing classes will commence on Thursday, September 3 the Old School House Foyle, Ballydesmond. Beginners start at 7.30pm and Advanced at 8.00 pm. All welcome.

Trail: IRD Duhallow will launch the Sliabh Luachra Cultural Trail with a bus tour which will depart from Bruach na Carraigem Rockchapel on Sunday at 2.00pm. The music, culture and history of Sliabh Luachra will be explored and entertainment provided along the way. To register, please contact James on 029-60633.

Party: A retirement party for Lena Kelleher, matron of Millstreet Community Hospital is being organised for Friday, September 4 in the Wallis Arms, Millstreet. For details call 029-70003. Tickets are limited.

Victors: Congratulations to seniors Paul Murphy and Aidan O’Mahony and minor Darren Brosnan on their successes in Croke Park at the weekend.

Showdown: Best of luck to Ashlinn Desmond and all Kerry ladies and management who play Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final this Saturday at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. The game will commence at 6.00pm.
