THE JENKS FILE
Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar concluded her high school career with yet another victory in the 1500 and the final tally of her accomplishments is impressive. It was Jenks’ fourth straight victory in the Class 4A race and came after she won her third straight title in the 800. She earlier won the 3200 for the fourth straight time and is only the second runner to win the distance triple three times. Hall of Famer Kristin Hansen of Okoboji is the other. Jenks finishes with 11 state championships and 10 Drake Relays title. The 21 combined championships are the most for an Iowa high school girl.
DASH FLIP-FLOP
Des Moines Roosevelt senior Briyana Carter turned the tables on Waterloo East freshman Kerris Roberts in the 100. Roberts beat Carter at the Drake Relays last month, winning that race in record time, but Carter prevailed in the rematch to win her second straight Class 4A title. Carter finished in 12-flat and Roberts took second in 12:06. It’s the fourth straight year a Roosevelt runner has won the race.
BOUNCING BACK
Waterloo East Kerris Roberts shook off her loss in the 100 and came back with a victory in the 200. The East freshman had only the fifth-best time in the preliminaries but was fast when it counted, winning in 24.74. And with that victory, she became the first East athlete to win an individual event at state.
SHE WAS PERFECT
Aleenah Marcucci of Northeast was a perfect 16 in state meet competition — she qualified in the maximum 16 events in her career and medaled in all 16, including six golds. Marcucci concluded her career by winning the Class 2A 100 hurdles for the second straight. She also has two titles each in the 400 hurdles and long jump. At this year’s meet, she also anchored her team to a third-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay. Her time of 14.42 in the 100 hurdles ties for sixth on the all-time list.
ASSUMPTION IS AWESOME AGAIN
Davenport Assumption rolled to its fourth straight Class 3A team championship — and this latest title is the most impressive of all. Assumption won four relays, including its fifth 4×100 title in the last seven years, and finished with 126 records — a record for any class. Assumption set the previous 3A record with 107 points in 2014. The overall record had been 110 points by 1A champion North Tama in 2008. Assumption passed that figure with two events remaining, then topped of its big performance with that victory in the 4×100.
BALANCE CARRIES THE DAY
Waukee showed tremendous balance in outpointing Pleasant Valley 83-77 to win its fourth Class 4A team title — all since 2009. The Warriors did it without winning event.
Class 2A champion Cascade won for the third time and Class 1A winner Britt West Hancock picked up its second championship.

OH, CAN RYAN RUN
Dowling Catholic’s accomplished a rare feat when he swept the three Class 4A distances races at last year’s state meet. He repeated that feat this year and became the first runner in 111 years of state meet competition to do it twice. Schweizer capped his high school career by winning a second consecutive title in the 1600, cruising to the victory in 4:14.70. That gave him eight state championships in his career, all in the last two years — two titles each in the 800, 1600, 3200 and medley relay.
LUCKY SEVEN
Isaiah Trousil of West Burlington/Notre Dame ran seven times during the meet. He or his team crossed the finish line first all seven times. Trousil won the Class 2A 100 and 200, anchored the winning 4×100 relay team and ran on the winning 4×200 relay unit. Trousil competed in preliminary races in the 100, 200 and 4×100 and he was the fastest across the line in those races, too.
ELI’S COMING
Boone has had some success winning distance races at the state, but until Eli Hicks came along, it had been nearly 100 years since anyone at the school won a sprint title. Hicks won the Class 3A 100 in a close race, finishing in 11.02, then claimed his second title of the meet by winning the 200 in 21.68. The last sprint champion from Boone was Arthur Higbee in the 440 in 1919. For good measure, Hicks anchored Boone to a victory in the 4×100 relay.
WALLACE DOES IT AGAIN
A Drake Relays championship in the 110 hurdles wasn’t enough for Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Joah Wallace. He came back on the same track and in the same event to win the Class 4A championship — and he did it in record time. Wallace won the race in 14.06, which ranks third on the state’s all-time list. The record he broke had been on the books for a while — the 14.1 that Chris Wycoff of Ames ran in 1993.
THAT DIDN’T LAST LONG
Isaiah Trousil’s records in the Class 2A 100 and 200 lasted only two days. He set those marks in the preliminaries on Thursday, then came back in the finals to run even faster. Trousil won the 100 in 10.69 after running 10.83 in the prelims, which broke the old mark of 10.84 that Britt’s Jeff Nielsen set in 1980. Then he won the 200 in 21.33, which ties for the No. 2 spot on the state’s all-time list, behind only the 20.80 run by the great Tim Dwight. Trousil had run 21.40 in the 200 prelims.
MONTICELLO ACE STRIKES IT RICH
Monticello’s Matt Manternach ran in four races this weekend and crossed the finish line first in every one of them. Maternach completed his memorable state meet by outdueling Aplington-Parkersburg’s C.J. May, the 3200 champion, in the stretch to win the Class 2A 1600. That came after he won the 800 and anchored the Panthers victories in the 4×800 and medley relays.
AAAH, BACH
Marion sophomore Myles Bach left a strong impression on fans at the state meet. Running against good fields, Bach won the Class 3A 3200 on Thursday, then came back on the final day to notch a victory in the 1600 while pulling away. Bach had given an indication of his ability when he finished fifth at the state cross country meet last fall. All of those ahead of him were juniors and seniors.
PRAIRIE PROVES ITSELF
A big-time performance from sprinter Jalen Rima carried Cedar Rapids Prairie to the Class 4A championship, its first team title in track. Rima won the 100, 200 and 400 and anchoring the winning 4×100 relay team as the Hawks finished with 87 points. Cedar Falls was second with 70.
Class 3A champion Pella won for the third time, West Burlington/Notre Dame claimed its second straight Class 2A title and Lisbon won for the second straight year in Class 1A.
