Mary Ellen Moore, 79, of rural Bonaparte, passed away at 10:09 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

Born July 28, 1937 in Aurora, Illinois the daughter of James Hunter and Edith (McMichael) Goudie. On June 18, 1960 she married Larry Moore at the AuSable Grove Presbyterian Church near Oswego, Illinois.

Survivors include her husband Larry of Bonaparte, Iowa, four children; Mary Jo (Keith) Heitzman of Tampa, Florida, Jim (Lisa) Moore of Bonaparte, Iowa, Sharon (Mike) Burek of Winsted, Connecticut and Doug (Angie) Moore of Donnellson, Iowa, one AFS daughter; Maggie Thorsteinsdottir of Iceland, seven grandchildren; Paula Heitzman, Kate (Luke) Wells, Jake (Stacy) Moore, Paige Moore, Austin Moore, Caleb Moore and Connor Moore, Maggie’s children; Adolf and Auder, one great grandson; Camron Moore, one step-brother and one step-sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother and step-brother.

Mary Ellen was a 1955 graduate of West Aurora High School. She graduated from Iowa State College in 1959 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught for one year at Lost Nation High School. Mary Ellen was a member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church in rural Farmington where she and Kay Vandenberg were the first female Elders. She was very active in the church, she sang in the choir, was very active in the Presbyterian Women’s Association and she taught Sunday School. Mary Ellen was a member of Chapter O of P.E.O., several bridge groups and sewing clubs. She served on the Van Buren County Board of Review and the Election Board for several years. She enjoyed her family first and foremost, her church, traveling, needlework, quilting and mowing the yard.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Monday, November 14, 2016 at the Sharon Presbyterian Church in rural Farmington, Iowa with the Reverend Doctor Mary Anne Welch officiating.

Burial will be at the Sharon Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in her memory for Hospice of Central Iowa or Lee County Hospice.
