The Washington Demon wrestling team hosted the Mt. Pleasant Panthers last night and defeated M.P. 45-24 in the Southeast Conference dual. Winning matches for Mt. Pleasant.

At 285 lbs: Jackson Kelley had a Decision 4-0, 126 lbs: Colten Mertens won a decision 6-0) 132 lbs: Connor Eads won by decision 4-1. At 145 lbs.: Rob Pohren won by forfeit. 152 lbs: Tyler Davis by fall in 5:07. 170 lbs: Noah Brown won by decision 7-6. In JV action Keegan Pullis won his match by fall.

The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team traveled to Washington for action Thursday. In the “A” game M.P. won 38-7 Rhett Zeglen led the scoring with 14 points. Panthers won the “B” game also 19-7, Riley McQuiggen scored 6 points. The “C” game went to the Panthers also by a score of 14-13, Willie Banks had 6 points to lead the scoring, Nick Tansey made 2 free throws to provide the winning margin at the end of the game.

It’s back to Southeast conference action for the Mt. Pleasant High School girls and boys basketball teams Friday night. The girls host Fairfield and the boys play on the Trojans home court. Fairfield is leading the conference race with a perfect 4-0 record and are 9-3 overall.   Mt. Pleasant is in 2nd place at 2-2 and 7-2 overall. It is still possible for the Panthers to win or tie for the title, but they have to win out in the second sweep through the conference schedule and get a little help from other teams. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will give you score updates on the girls game as we broadcast the varsity boys game from Fairfield. The Panther boys are 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. They beat the Trojans when they met in Mt. Pleasant December 5th by a 54-33 score. Fairfield is now 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the league. Burlington girls at North Scott, North Scott boys at Burlington, Maharishi boys at Harmony, the Harmony boys lost to Moulton Udell last night 62-37.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released their weekly girls basketball ratings. Burlington Notre Dame #1 in Class 1A, Mediapolis #1 in class 3A and Keokuk #13 in class 4A.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the District competitors for Class 1A and 2A boys basketball tournaments. The Districts are scheduled to begin February 16th. District #9 of Class 1A has Danville, Cardinal of Eldon, Harmony, Holy Trinity Catholic, Maharishi, New London, Pekin, Van Buren, Waco and Winfield Mt. Union. The winner of that district will play the winner of district #10 in the substate championship for the right to go to the state tournament. Teams in district #10: Keota, Lynnville-Sully, Moravia, Moulton Udell, North Mahaska, Seymour, Sigourney, Twin Cedars and Corydon Wayne.

The 2A District #10 has Central Lee, Columbus Community, Highland, Mediapolis, Notre Dame, Wapello and West Burlington. They will play the District #9 champ in the substate, the teams in that district are: Durant, L&M, Iowa City Regina, West Branch, West Liberty and Wilton.

The 3A and 4A substate pools will be announced in another week.

The Mt. Pleasant versus Solon girls basketball games that were to be played Monday January 5th have been rescheduled for Monday January 26th.  Fresh-Soph game begins at 4:30, followed by the JV and Varsity games. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the varsity game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Henry County Conservation Naturalist Cari Nicely has announced the schedule for this year’s fly tying classes. This year there is one for beginners and one for experienced tiers. Here are the details of the classes.
