The Mt. Pleasant High School softball team rolled over Wapello at Maple Leaf field last night 12-2. Bailey Johnson was the winning pitcher throwing a 1 hitter, Leslie Taylor and Lauren Ralls were 2-3 at the plate. M.P. has a record of 8-11, today they play a conference double header at Keokuk.

OTHER AREA SOFTBALL: Mt. Pleasant freshman beat Burlington 4-0 and 10-8 in a double header, Central City beat WMU 15-1, Central Lee split a twin bill with Pekin Hawks lost the 1st game 10-0 but won the 2nd 6-1, Fairfield 12 Albia 0 and Fairfield 8 Albia 7, Keokuk 5 Cardinal Eldon 0.

Mt. Pleasant outscored Albia 11-10 in a nonconference baseball game played at Maple Leaf field last night. Tyler Pace singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning, he was 2-4 for the night with 4 RBI’s. Austin Smith had 3 hits, Justin Chalupa had 2 hits as did Carson Remick and Taylor Alliman. Brennen Welcher was the winning pitcher. M.P. will take a 7-6 overall record and a 3-1 conference record to a double header at Keokuk tonight.

Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced District Tournament baseball sites and assignments for Classes 1A and 2A, pairings will be coming out soon. Class 1A District #10 will be hosted by Danville and Van Buren. Teams involved are: Harmony, Holy Trinity Catholic, New London, Notre Dame, Waco and Winfield Mt. Union, along with the host schools.

Class 2A District #12 will be hosted by L&M, teams competing will be Central Lee, Columbus Community, Mediapolis, Wapello, West Burlington and the host school.

On June 28th the MPHS JV softball tournament will be played with 6 teams competing at East Lake Park. MPHS, Ottumwa, Fairfield, Keokuk, Washington and Ft. Madison. Games will be played at 9 a.m., 10:45 and 12:30 p.m. using 3 diamonds.

Henry County Health Center is hosting a Coaching Clinic on Tuesday, July 15, from 5-8 p.m. at the HCHC Health Education Center. The clinic is open to all interested certified coaches and volunteer coaches.

Mt. Pleasant High School golfer Kiley Miller, based on his third place tie in the 2014 3-A State Golf Meet has pre-qualified status for the Iowa Masters Golf Tournament.  The tournament, sponsored by Iowa State University and held at ISU’s Veenker Golf Course, is also one of the tournaments designated by the Iowa Golf Association used to determine the IGA Amateur of the Year.

The tournament will be held on July 11-13 this year.

The Winfield Mt. Union vs Waco Alumni Football game is coming up July 26th. Tickets are on sale now from any WMU or WACO alumni player. Game will be played at Roth Field in Wayland. It starts at 7pm.

The 28th annual Iowa Senior Games (ISG) will be held in West Des Moines June 12-15. Athletes ages 50 and over can register to compete in this Olympic-style competition with 29 sports and nearly 100 events. The early registration deadline is May 19 and the registration fee is $35. After May 19 the registration fee will increase to $40. Registration fee includes a t-shirt, admission to the Hall of Fame banquet, and an unlimited number of Iowa Senior Games events.

“This year’s event will be full of great competition and we are expecting a record number of athletes,” commented Iowa Senior Games director, Matt Beatty. “The West Des Moines community has been a great partner for the Games and we are excited to host another great event.”

Over 800 athletes from across Iowa and the nation are expected to compete. Age groups are broken into 5 year brackets (50-54, 55-59, etc.) with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to each group.

Participants in this year’s Games will have an opportunity to qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games, held in Minneapolis, MN.

Lake Geode Challenge, an Olympic-distance triathlon in southeast Iowa, again will serve as a regional special qualifier race for USA Triathlon’s Midwest Region. USA Triathlon is the governing body for triathlon in the United States. The race, which has been sanctioned by USAT since it began in 1993, has been a special-qualifier race for the last two years. Top finishers at Lake Geode Challenge may qualify for the Age Group National Championship.

This year’s Lake Geode Challenge will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Geode State Park in Danville, Iowa. The event starts with a 1.5-kilometer clockwise, out-and-back swim from the Lake Geode beach. The swim is followed by a 40-kilometer bike course that takes participants on a loop outside Geode State Park. The race concludes with a 10-kilometer run on asphalt roads throughout the park. Chip timing is used.

Prize money ($300, $200, $125, $75 and $50) will be awarded to the top five male and female finishers. Rick Buller Financial Services, LLC, also is sponsoring cash awards ($125, $75 and $50) to the top three male and top three female Masters (40+) finishers. Participants cannot win an overall cash award and a Masters cash award. Members of the top three male, female and coed teams will receive trophies. Participants also will be eligible for door prizes.

Registration fees are $65 for single and $123 for teams through June 28. After that, fees increase to $85 for single and $141 for teams. Entry fees do not include USAT’s required one-day $12 permit for non-member participants.

The race is organized by Team BEAST (Burlington Endurance Athlete Sports Team). Great River Health Systems is the lead sponsor.
