Mt. Pleasant Panther girls track coach Dave Hutchcroft has been named the at large class 3A girls track coach of the year for 2013. Dave received the award at the Iowa High School Girls Track Coaches convention held in Ames over the weekend.
Mt. Pleasant finished 4th at the Wapello wrestling tournament Saturday with 120 points, Wilton won the team title with 190. Justin Dilks was the lone Panther champion at 220 pounds. Colton Mertens at 120 pounds, Connor Eads at 126 and Noah Brown at 182 picked up 2nd place finishes.
Mediapolis won the Burlington wrestling tourney with 436 points and 8 champions.
Eddyville-Blakesburg won the Jeremy , Fulk wrestling classic at New London with 201 points, the host school was 6th and Waco 10th.
The 12th ranked Mt. pleasant Panther girl’s basketball team survived a big scare Friday night on their home court when they had to go into overtime to defeat Southeast conference foe Fairfield 49-46. Mt. Pleasant held a 14 point lead early in the second half, but by the end of regulation the game was tied at 44. M.P. outscored the Trojans 5-2 in the o.t. and evened their overall record at 2-2 and are 1-0 in the league. Taryne Shull had 18 points, with half of them coming from the free throw line, Mt. Pleasant hit 17 of 29 free throw attempts while Fairfield was 12 of 22, 45 fouls were called in the game. Shelby Allender and Hannah Becker both added 8 points, Kelsi Phipps playing in her first game of the season scored 6.
Fairfield won the Freshman game 41-33, and the JV game 35-27.
Mt. Pleasant fell to Iowa City City High in boys basketball on the Little Hawks court 59-47. M.P. trailed by 17 at halftime but fought back to within five points in the final two minutes of the game. Panthers were led by Trey Magnani with 13 points. Dustin Amos and Zach Mulford had 12 each. City High won the JV game 80-24.
Next up Mt. Pleasant travels to Cedar Rapids Prairie Tuesday night.
The MPHS boy’s basketball team dropped a Southeast Conference game at Fairfield Friday night, the first time in a long time that the Panthers have lost in the league. The talented Trojans defeated M.P. 63-60. Zach Mulford hit for 25 points and Trey Magnani added 10.
Mt. Pleasant won the freshman game 64-22, Dshundric Foster had 16 points. In the JV game MP won 46-36 with Kolby Raymond scoring 12 points.
Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball defeated Spalding University 71-64 on Saturday
IWC is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC.

The Iowa Hawkeye football team found out their bowl destination last night, the Hawks will play in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida on New Year’s Day against LSU. The game will kickoff at 11 a.m. Iowa time, LSU is 9-3 and the Hawks 8-4.
The BCS National Championship game will be played at Pasadena, California January 6th with undefeated 13-0 Florida State playing once beaten 12-1 Auburn.
KILJ-FM will bring you Iowa Hawkeye basketball tonight at 6 p.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Former Cedar Rapids, Iowa resident Zach Johnson won the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge golf tournament in California, hosted by Tiger Woods. Johnson won a two hole playoff over the host after both golfers shot 275, Zach took home a $1 million pay check.
Run Recruits, a company based in Ohio, is coming to the Iowa Wesleyan College campus to host a recruiting fair for high school cross country/track & field athletes and football players on Saturday, December 14 from 10am-2pm. The event is open to high school seniors interested in competing in cross country/track & field and/or football at the college level.
College coaches will be present at tables for student-athletes to meet and learn more about the schools’ programs and the opportunities to compete at the colleges. Parents and high school coaches are welcome as well.
The event is an opportunity for college coaches to get connected with aspiring student-athletes who are really looking to find a college that suits their needs academically as well as athletically. This is an easy way for high school cross country/track & field and football athletes to get connected with college coaches.
Some schools that will be in attendance include Iowa Wesleyan College, Cornell College, Eureka College, Lake Forest College, Rockford University, Simpson College, Southwestern Community College, and William Penn University.

The Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships have been a sold out event for over 20 years and is the only Iowa High School Athletic Association reserved ticket event.
Ticket sales for the state meet to IHSAA member high schools who host wrestling programs will begin Monday, December 2, 2013 at 10:00am and close Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 11:59pm.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 10:00am. The public will be able to purchase tickets at the Iowa Events Center ticket office, any Dahl’s store, online at www.dahlstickets.com . The order limit will be eight (8) tickets.
The ticket price is $8.00 per ticket, plus a convenience fee of $1.75 per ticket. There will be a $4.00 handling fee per order. A valid credit card will be needed to make an online purchase. The Iowa Events Center seating chart will be available identifying class 1A, 2A, and 3A mats. All seats will be assigned in the order the transactions are processed either at a ticketing location or online.
Fly-rod building class and Fly-tying class by local expert Dan Peterson.
Participants will build their own custom fly rod step by step- everything from spinning the rod to putting the final finish on it. When it’s done, participants will have a custom built fly rod perfect for Iowa trout and pan fish. This rod will outperform most mass produced, higher priced store bought rods. Tools for use during the class will be provided. Rod kit includes (one) 8” 4wt fly rod; ¾ wt. reel; and floating line. The cost for this class, including all materials PLUS one fly-tying session, is $250.00. This would make a perfect Christmas gift for the fisherman in your family- gift certificates are available. The class is limited to the first 5 people who pay their fee- others will be put on a waiting list. Classes will be held at Oakland Mills Nature Center on Saturday, January 18, 2014, from 9-5 p.m.; Sunday, January 19th, from 1-5 p.m.; Tuesday, January 21st, at 6:30 p.m.; and if needed, Wednesday, January 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. The fly-tying session will be Thursday, January 30, at 6:30 p.m., also in the Oakland Mills Nature Center. A one time fly-tying instruction class will be held on January 30, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public at the cost of $15.00 per participant. Three flies will be tied that night and participants will take them home. All materials will be supplied and is included in the cost. Vices and tool kits are available for classroom use only. Participants need not bring anything. Maximum 10 participants. Minimum age: 14 years old. Deadline to sign-up and pay for the fly-tying session is January 22nd.
