The MPHS volleyball team is ranked 15th in the latest rankings from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and they deserve it.  They improved their record to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southeast Conference when they swept Keokuk in Panther Gym last night 25-19, 25-10, 25-17.  Lydia Smith and Mary Wester had 10 kills each.  Ashley Loving and Brianne Potts each had 6 ace serves and Potts had 16 digs.

The Freshman team beat Keokuk 23-25, 25-10, 16-14

Sarah Moffett & Bailey Johnson each had 3 kills. Kylie Sourwine & Raimee Dossett each had 2 kills.

Genna Cristoforo and Dossett each had 5 aces and Emma Overton had 4 aces.

The JV team won over Keokuk: 25-11, 25-21

The other ranked teams in the area that were in action last night , Class 1A #1 Holy Trinity Catholic swept Central Lee , New London #6  swept Van Buren and WMU #7 swept Columbus Community.  #13 Mediapolis swept IMS.  Wapello swept Waco 3-0.

Mt. Pleasant did well at the Fairfield Cross Country invitational winning the girls class with a 36 score and the boy’s were 2nd, Ft. Madison won with 28, MPHS scored 50.

Ellie Conrad won the girls individual title running 16:34, Beth Wells was 4th, Chloe Haffarnan 5th, 12th Emma Ludwig, Natalie Ita was 14th.

In the boy’s race 24th ranked Logan Murray was first in 16:11, 8th Adam Bodenham, 9th Josh Beelman, 15th Dalton Krum, 17th Ryan Hutchison. The Panther Middle School and JV teams also ran very strong yesterday.

#2 ranked Pekin won the small school girls race Danville-New London was 5th.  Wapello won the boys class, WMU was 4th Danville-New London was 6th.

 

Solon comes to Evans field tonight to play football against the winless Mt. Pleasant Panthers, the Spartans are 1-1 on the year.  M.P. suffered their second loss of the season last Friday night when the class 4A Ottumwa Bulldogs beat them 46-3, Solon lost to #1 ranked class 1A Iowa City Regina 38-0.  Solon Coach Kevin Miller said they made way too many mistakes especially offensively.  Shawn Striegel says he feels the pain coach Miller had last week as the Panthers have also at key times made penalties or mistakes that put them behind the 8-ball.  Last year Solon beat M.P. 56-6, a game where the Spartans returned the opening kickoff and Mt. Pleasant never recovered.

KILJ-FM 105.5 will broadcast live with the pregame show starting at 6:30 and kickoff at 7:30.  The freshman teams of the two schools meet at 5 p.m.

The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team fell to 0-3 on the year after a 6-2 loss to Robert Morris University-Springfield on Wednesday.

IWC’s Bo Vitale got the Tigers on the board by scoring off a long shot.

The Tigers’ Jason Gonzalez found the back of the net, assisted by Vitale for their 2nd goal.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Knox College to take on the Prairie Fire.  The game is set for 1:00pm in Galesburg, IL.

 

From August 24th thru Sept. 2 the following athletic teams logged in 1584 hours working in some capacity associated with Midwest Old Threshers or the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce.  They were also attending classes /practices.  So some days were very long.  The teams involved included Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Golf, Football, men’s/ women’s cross country and track, men’s/ women’s soccer, Baseball, and softball.

 

 

A big night of racing is coming up this Saturday.  The Mod Lite Stars National Event comes to 34 Raceway with $1500 on the line to win the 34 car, 34 lap Mod Lite feature. A caution will come out on lap 20 for a fuel and chassis adjustment during the 34 lap Mod Lite feature event.

Also on the card will be 305 Sprints competing for $1000 to win, Stock Cars $500 to win and Sport Mods $500 to win.

Pit gates open at 4:00 , grandstands 5:00 and racing begins at 7:00.

The Race: Distance and Course

5K Run/walk.  Start and finish on Main Street, downtown Columbus Junction.  The course will be on city streets with a trip through the park.

Winfield Mt. Union High School is preparing for a very spirited homecoming celebration. Boom night activities will be Wednesday October 2nd starting at 6PM.  They will crown the king and queen then have some fun with the guys playing volleyball and girls football in the powderpuff football game.  The evening will end with some speakers around the bonfire including a former WMU graduate.

Friday will be spirit day with a pep assembly starting at 2:15.  The parade will end the school day at around 2:40!  The court will be announced again during half time of the game.

Saturday evening 8-11, students will have a dance to end the homecoming week activities.

 

 

The IWC men’s and women’s basketball 2013 golf outing is coming up on September 20th at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.  This is a 4 person best shot tournament to benefit the IWC basketball programs.  Cost is $70 per golfer, and that includes dinner.  There will be various contests and games for golfers to win nice prizes like grills, professional game tickets, golf equipment and other items.  If you would like to participate sign up by September 14th with Kurt Moon at Brown’s Shoe Fit in Mt. Pleasant or call 385-2931.  There are also opportunities for hole sponsors, and raffles prize donations.

 

Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.
