The Mt. Pleasant Athletic Booster Club will host the annual “Meet The Players Night” on Friday, August 23rd at the Mapleleaf Community Complex.  The Athletic Boosters will be serving meals, selling memberships, and introducing the players, cheerleaders and coaches of the Mt. Pleasant Community Middle School and High School fall sports teams, followed by a scrimmage of the 9th – 12th grade football teams.  This is a great opportunity to show your support for our teams and get involved in another exciting year of athletics in Mt. Pleasant.  Everyone is invited to attend.

 

 

Schedule of Events:

 

                           6:30 p.m. – Mt. Pleasant Athletic Boosters begin serving meals

                          

                           7:15 p.m. – Introductions of players, managers, cheerleaders, and coaches begins

-          7 – 12 Cross Country introductions – girls, then boys

-          7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, Varsity Football (9th & 10th warm up during VB introductions)

-          7th, 8th, 9th, JV, V  Volleyball

 

7:40 p.m. – Introductions of 7th, 8th, 9th, JV & Varsity Cheerleaders

         9th grade defense vs. 10th grade offense scrimmage

                                  

7:50 p.m. – 9th grade offense vs. 10th grade defense scrimmage

 

8:00 p.m. – Varsity offense vs. Varsity defense scrimmage

 

 

Mt. Pleasant Middle School 7th and 8th grade football players who have not picked up their football equipment yet, may do so today from 3:30-5 p.m. at the middle school locker room at Maple Leaf Complex.  Coaches will be there to assist players needing equipment, practice will begin the 1st day of school Monday.

 

The Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team plays the AMW All Stars in Paris today, so far the Hawks are 2-0 playing across the pond.

 

Mt. Pleasant Athletic Boosters are conducting their annual sale of local discount cards. High School Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country athletes will be selling the discount cards for $20.00, these cards can be used to receive discounts at many local businesses. Any questions about these cards can be directed to the high school activities department.  

 

Here is some news of upcoming bowling events in Mt. Pleasant.

 1)  The Mt. Pleasant USBC will hold their fall membership meeting on Tuesday evening, August 20th, at 7 pm at the Iris Bowling Center Alley Lounge.  Delegates for the men’s, women’s and youth conventions will be elected.  All members are encouraged to attend.  Youth bowlers 14 or over may participate in the elections.

2)  Sign-ups for the youth bowling league will be Friday & Saturday, August 23rd & 24th, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at the Iris Bowling Center.  Membership fee is $17.00.  Weekly bowling fee is $6.50.  Each youth bowler will receive 2 free t-shirts.  The bowling season will be 20 weeks.

 

The Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA will be idle tonight, before returning to action on Friday, August 23rd. Which will be KILJ 105.5 FM Season Championship Night, with all five track champions being crowned.

Four classes of cars took to the track at 34 Raceway Saturday night with three of the four classes seeing first time winners for the 2013 season.

Jay Johnson, West Burlington won the Late Models, Creston Williams of Atkins won the IMCA Sport Mods,  and Mike Weikert, Jr. of Muscatine captured the IMCA Modifieds,  all these drivers picked up their first wins of the season, while Wayne Noble, Wapello won his second 4 Cylinder feature this season at 34 Raceway.

Coming up this Saturday, August 17 will be the fan favorite “Night of the Twins featuring the Sprint Invaders 360 Sprints. Fans will see not one, but two, Sprint Invaders features. Also on the card, the UMP Late Models return as well as the 4 Cylinders and the Mod Lites are back this week. Coming up Saturday, August 24 will be $5 Fan Appreciation Season Championship night with final point races for all six classes. 4-H members are invited to wear  their green 4-h shirt and get admitted free to the grandstands.

Sprint fans can mark their calendars for two special events coming up.  The first huge event will be on Friday, August 30 when the USAC Triple Crown Non-Wing 410 Sprints will be at 34 Raceway. Also competing will be the 305 Sprints and IMCA Sport Mods.

On Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 is a big two night show for sprint fans when the Midwest Open Wheel Association returns to 34 Raceway for the 410 Outlaw Sprint  Challenge. $4000 will go to the winner of the 410 sprint feature with a bonus $1000 to win both nights. Also on the card are 4 cylinders and Mod Lites.

Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.

The social hour begins at 5:15 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, or $20 for a spouse or child. Ticket order deadline is August 29, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
