New London dropped their championship game 5-4 to #1 ranked Akron Westfield Friday at Harlan Rogers sports complex in Ft. Dodge.  The game was filled with errors by both teams, first by Akron Westfield they committed 7 and that allowed New London to score their 4 runs in the 2nd inning to take a 4-0 lead.  New London committed 4 errors throughout the game that helped the Westerners score 1 run in the 5th 3 in the 6th to tie the game and then 1 in the top of the seventh to grab the lead.  New London ended the game in the bottom of the 7th with runners at 2nd and 3rd but a strike out ended their dream of going into the State Tourney as the 10th ranked team and coming out as #1.  Morgan Christner suffered the loss pitching for N.L.  Hitting was led by Sammi Koontz, Victoria Noel and Emma Pry who all hit safely.

New London ends the season with a 31-10 record and loses only 1 senior to graduation, that being 2nd baseman Caitlin Chiri.  Emily Parks and Morgan Christner were named to the all tournament team.

Durant won the 2A title, Bondurant Farrar won 3A, Dallas Center Grimes won 4A and West Des Moines Dowling won the 5A class.

 

Van Buren came from behind and won their opening game in the 2013 State Baseball Tournament 6-5 in 8 innings over Don Bosco.  A hit batsman with the bases loaded brought in the winning run.  The Warriors now play in the semi finals Thursday against Van Meter at 2 p.m. at Principal Park in Des Moines.  Other 1A winners were Mason City Newman and Twin Cedars, they play at noon Thursday.

Class 2A quarterfinals will be played today.

 

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference named their all conference baseball teams, Matayo Christianer of New London was named 1st team all conference for the South Division.  Quincy Porter, Tyler Shinkle and Devon Smith were 2nd team for the Tigers.  Honorable mention honors went to Cameron Watson and Jayden Flowers.

 

The Southeast Conference named their all conference baseball team.  Mt. Pleasant High School players named 1st team are:  Dustin Amos, Tyler Pace, Carson Remick and Austin Smith.  2nd team players:  Connor Shull, Colton Schinstock, Justin Dilks and Alex O’Donnell.  Honorable mention honors went to:  Jacob Dilks and Tony Cristoforo.

All Academic selections were:  Trey Magnani, Tyler Pace, Carson Remick and Colton Schinstock.

 

Crazy Coyote Bike Night Saturday at 34 Raceway drew another good turnout of cars ready to take to the track. Bikers were allowed to take a few laps around the track and Young House Family Services, Burlington, also benefited from the night at races. Four of the six classes of action saw four racers getting their first wins of the 2013 season at 34 Raceway and two drivers would make return trips.

Dennis Woodworth, Quincy, Il. ( late models), Dennis LaVeine, Burlington (IMCA Modifides), Shon Sanders,  East Moline, Il. (mod lites) and Wayne Noble, Wapello (4 cylinders) all got wins for the first time this season while Tony Dunker, Quincy, Il. (IMCA Modifides) and Tom Bowling, Danville (IMCA Stock Cars) both returned to victory lane. 

Coming up this week, Saturday, August 3 is Scout Night at the races with all scouts & 1 parent admitted FREE into the grandstands. And for the kids there will be a Candy Dash!!!.  305 Sprints, IMCA Modifides, Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, 4 Cylinders and Mod Lites will all be in action.

 

On Friday August 2nd there is going to be a benefit volleyball game in the New London High School gym to raise funds for a former Tiger player who is battling cancer.  Sarah Staebell who graduated in 1992 is the former player being helped in her battle with colon cancer.  Food, social hour and silent auction begin at 6 p.m.  A volleyball match featuring former players will begin at 7 p.m.   Kevin Geary who was Sarah’s head coach will be coaching the match.

 

Grab your running shoes and beads and join the party at the 2013 Crooked Creek Days “Mardi Gras” Fun Run at 7:30am on Saturday, August 3.  Events include a 5K Run & Walk and a 1 Mile Run & Walk.

Registration forms are available on the Crooked Creek Days Facebook site, or at Pilot Grove Savings Bank, Peoples State Bank and the Winfield City Office.  Day of registration and check-in begin at 7:00am.  All races will begin at 7:30am followed by an awards ceremony.  The race start and finish will be at the Winfield School.  The awards’ ceremony for overall male and female, and 1st and 2nd place in each age category, will follow.

Entry fees include water, snacks and a t-shirt. Late and day of race registration is $25.00.  Male & female age categories include:  9 and under, 10-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 & over.  Come run your beads off at the scenic course to historic Crooked Creek!

 

The 2nd annual Mile Mile run is coming up August 3. A straight one mile dirt road course will be used, in case of mud a grass loop run will be held.

The event is located at: 2332   210TH ST. just outside of Mt. Pleasant Ia. And begins at

9:00 AM.  The event is a dirt road straight mile race. All proceeds go to the Mt Pleasant XC team. The race will be from Mile Ave on 210th to Nebraska Ave. It is a hard packed dirt farm field road.

Entry fees are $5 and there will not be any shirts. This is an old school race. Awards will be to male and female winners in Grade school, middle school, high school, college and open divisions.

The Columbus cross country team will hold two fund-raising runs at Chinkapin Bluffs Recreation Area in August. The first one will be Thursday, August 8, and the second will be Tuesday, August 13. The runs begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 3-mile run on the grass trail and a kids’ run on the gravel path. Entry fee is $5, which benefits the Columbus cross country team. Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.
