MANILA, Philippines – A teenage beauty from Cebu City took the helm after she was crowned as Miss Philippines Earth 2014.
The 19-year-old Cebuana outshined all other finalists after getting the judges’ approval to win the most coveted title during the grand coronation night held Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Jamie Herrel sent the crowd into cheers after she wittingly answered the question thrown at her by Akbayan partylist spokesperson Risa Hontiveros during the question and answer portion of the pageant night.
When Hontiveros asked whether humans have been good children to Mother Earth, a roaring applause filled the pageant arena as Herrel took everyone in great awe when she said “we haven’t been good children. In fact, I believe that we are the number one cause of her problems.”
The pageant held recently is the 14th edition of Miss Philippines Earth.
Prior to her victory, Herrel was described as “the girl to beat” in a report from Rappler.
She was the overall winner in the Miss PH Earth Reality during the pre-pageant after earning awards in the Fun for a Cause and competitons for the Darling of the Press, Resort Wear, Swimsuit and Cultural Wear.
The Cebuana lass who also brought home several of the minor awards succeeded Angelee delos Reyes who ranked number 8 at last year’s international pageant.
The Rappler report said she might have been too short to become a beauty queen, but her fresh and charming face , good physical attributes and eloquence made her a major force to reckon with.
Herrel stood out among 49 other contestants for the title and will compete for the international Miss Earth crown this year.
The Miss Earth, which started in 2001, is among the world’s four largest beauty pageants, along with the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International.
