Another reason to celebrate indeed as Filipino kids once more grabbed the spotlight for garnering a whopping 138 medals and 64 merit awards in the International Mathematics Wizards Challenge (IMWiC) which was recently held in Hong Kong Sam Yuk Education Center (Hong Kong Adventist Academy), New Territories, Hong Kong on August 10 – 11, 2015.
Truly worth to be given that big toast as the Philippines, bringing a total of 284 students, were able to bag 12 gold, 37 silver, 89 bronze medals including 64 merit awards which placed the PH team 2nd place in the overall tally; as shared by the Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP).
The IMWiC was able to gather a total of 913 students from different countries — China, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines; and was open to all primary one to six students and from junior secondary one to three students.
This is the eighth international math competition which the Philippines has participated in since July of this year, and notably, Filipinos have consistently placed among the top teams that swept the medals.
As per ranking, China took the lead with 16 gold medals and followed by the Philippines with 12 gold medals. Hong Kong bagged 11; Taiwan, 7; Macau, 4; and Indonesia, 2.
Amazingly, the latest reap is the second rich medal harvest in less than a week for the Filipino “mathletes” who are well-mentored by the Mathematics Trainers Guild.
Last week, the Philippine team composed of elementary students also bagged the second place in the Zhejiang Olympics in China.
The medal harvest consisted of seven gold, 24 silver and 38 bronze medals, totaling 69, which placed the Philippines second overall in the tally; as shared by Dr. Simon Chua, the president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines.
