Senate president Franklin Drilon has assured the public that the senate will do their best to pass the pending Anti-Political Dynasty Bill which prohibits political families from having many members in the political arena.

Drilon said the senate committee on electoral reforms and people’s participation headed by senator Koko Pimentel has already started tackling the pending bill. He said the senate will try to get the pulse of the people with regards to the significant bill.

Drilon said the senate has the political will to pass such an important bill just like what they did when they decided to scrap their pork barrel funds. The senate president from Iloilo province believes the passage of the anti-political dynasty bill will greatly help in changing the current political scene in the Philippines.

He lamented that the passage of the bill had long been sought by the Filipino populace for the past 27 years.

Cold On Fast Passage Of Anti-Political Dynasty Bill

Meanwhile, President Benigno Aquino III is not too keen on calling for the early passage of the anti-political dynasty bill. Presidential Communications secretary Sonny Coloma said the president is not too keen to make the bill a priority of his administration.

Coloma said there are other more pressing pending bills in Congress than the anti-political dynasty bill.

“The last time that the President was asked about that, he recognized the importance of the principle of anti-dynasty.”

But for the President, there are other more important pieces of legislation that need to be prioritized, Coloma said. “That is enshrined in our 1987 Constitution, but we need an enabling law to implement this.So this is important but not a top priority right now,” Coloma added.

Many people have called for the passage of anti-political dynasty bill to stop political families from lording it over in the elections. Among the top political families in the country are the Binays of Makati and Dutertes in Davao City.
