Apple has just pulled watchOS 3.1.1 after it was found that it bricks Apple Watch Series 2 models for some users. Here’s what you need to know about this issue.
Apple released final version of watchOS 3.1.1 only yesterday after a month and a half long beta period which involved both developers and public beta testers rigorously testing the new firmware update. Strangely enough, none of these so called “bricking” issues were reported during the beta cycle which saw as many as five watchOS 3.1.1 betas released for Apple Watch.
Following an unsuccessful attempt to update to watchOS 3.1.1, Apple Watch Series 2 owners are seeing a display with red exclamation mark in center (as shown in the image above) and text which instructions them to go visit apple.com/help/watch for additional info.
That link takes affected users to an Apple support page which shows users how to force restart an Apple Watch to fix this issue. It also mentions that If force restarting your Apple Watch doesn’t resolve the issue, you’ll need to have your Apple Watch serviced. Contact Apple for service options.
watchOS 3.1.1 is a point update available for original Apple Watch model, Series 1 as well as Series 2, and it mainly focuses on brining bug fixes, performance, and under-the-hood improvements instead of introducing any new user-facing changes.
Apple Watch Series 2
With Christmas and New Year holidays right around the corner, Apple will hopefully have a fix available sooner rather than later in the form of an updated watchOS 3.1.1 build with fix for this issue.
