Located in the vicinity of horse stables at Turf Club Road, Tin Hill Social serves as a great hang-out spot to kick back with good food and drinks. The food, in general, is pretty hearty with meats and heavier sharing items, and a selection of alcoholic beverages from wines to cocktails.

The area is split up into a few sections – an indoor and alfresco area and a standalone bar.

The spacious and relaxing vibes of Tin Hill Social makes it a very popular spot for people of all ages. When night falls, the restaurant gets pretty romantic – perfect for couples to treat themselves to some good food and drinks too. Here is what you can look out for at Tin Hill Social.

There are small and big plates available, with a good selection of sharing items for big groups. Some of these items include Hay Smoked Quail Eggs with Quinoa and Caviar (S$ 14) and Australian Darling Downs BMS* 6+ Wagyu Tartare (S$ 26.50).

The latter is a party of flavours and is served on a hollowed bone marrow. The mixture of Italian black truffle, the fresh meat, grana padano, quail egg and the dressing, makes it a delicious bite when eaten with a crisp crostini.

For mains, go right for the Tin Hill Darling Downs BMS 4+ Wagyu Brisket Burger (S$ 28.50). If burger is not your thing, try the Risotto (S$ 28). The taste of Porcini mushroom in each bite was distinct and fragrant. Mix in the half-cooked egg and egg yolk for a creamy texture.

Dining at Tin Hill Social will not be complete without a glass of wine or cocktail.

Held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival – also known as Mooncake Festival – was traditionally a ritual to worship the Gods. Today, the event is widely celebrated by Chinese communities all over the world and is even a public holiday in China. It is also during this period where the moon is the brightest and roundest.

The Mid-Autumn Festival has evolved tremendously over the years; it is now a cultural norm for businesses to exchange mooncakes and these sweet treats are available in numerous colours, flavours and shapes. From the significance of the celebration to the legends behind it, here is a brief guide on What Mid-Autumn Festival Is And Where To Celebrate in Singapore.

THE STORIES BEHIND IT

While there are many myths and legends behind the origin of Mooncake Festival, the most famous legend would definitely be the one about Chang Er and her husband, Hou Yi. Even so, there are still various stories behind the couple – but most of them revolve around the fact that Chang Er had downed the elixir of immortality and eventually ascended to the moon, forever.

The practice of celebrating Mooncake Festival actually dates back to more than 3,000 years. According to historians, offering sacrifices to the moon was popularised during the Song Dynasty and had since then become a social custom amongst the Chinese. In addition, the tradition of eating mooncakes is also a way to commemorate the uprising against the Mongols.

SIGNIFICANCE OF MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

The Mid-Autumn festival is closely tied to the following concepts, namely prosperity, reunion and thanksgiving. Large families in China have seized this occasion since ancient times to reunite, where they would gather together and admire the moon at its finest whilst eating mooncakes. Fun fact: The traditional round mooncakes are symbolic of unity due to its shape.

The tradition of exchanging mooncakes in present day is exceptionally popular in Singapore. In fact, the practice of gifting mooncakes to families, friends and/or business partners is seen as a way of maintaining personal and professional relationships.

While the inherent meaning has transformed, it is still heartwarming to see an age-old ritual integrated in modern society.

WHERE TO CELEBRATE MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL IN SINGAPORE

CHINATOWN

Head over to Chinatown during the Mid-Autumn Festival period and get ready to be blown away by the beautiful lantern display which features thousands of lit lanterns at nightfall.

Visitors can anticipate cultural dance performances along the streets as well as a bustling bazaar which sells a splendid selection of delicious mooncakes. This year, there is even a Mooncake Blind Tasting Contest held at Kreta Ayer Square on Saturday, 04 September 2016.

Nearest Station: Chinatown

CHINESE GARDEN

Beefing up their game – pun intended – Hilton Singapore’s Opus Bar & Grill introduces carefully selected prime grade Greater Omaha steaks, a great addition to their already amazing Australian steaks line-up. The success story behind Opus Bar & Grill’s iconic steaks comes from their open-flame charcoal grill and the use of a Himalayan salt tile dry-aging cabinet to dry-age the signature Australian Rangers Valley OP rib.

Steak prices for the newly-launched Greater Omaha Steaks are priced from S$ 68++ only and that’s supreme value for quality steaks! Non-steak lovers also have new fish and chicken options to look forward to.

Here’s the cherry on top – you can enjoy free flow house wines with every steak order! Steaks and wine; ain’t it going to be a wonderful night?

The highlight of the night goes to Opus Bar & Grill’s new selection of three prime grade cuts from U.S. Greater Omaha which are known for having strict requirements in keeping up to the high standards of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The 220g U.S. Greater Omaha steaks that are served to you are certified 100 days corn-fed beef cuts that taste well on its own without the need for extra seasoning.

The 220g US Prime Cut 100-Days Corn-Fed Sirloin (S$ 68++) is a cut that everyone can enjoy. It is a mix between the juicy fatty ribeye and meaty tenderloin, with a delicate, marbled texture and a slightly smoky flavour.

We love the green peppercorn sauce with this steak, or just a simple and light sprinkle of salt.

If you love a juicier and more intensely buttery steak, ribeye cuts are always the best. It was unanimous – the 220g US Prime Cut 100-Days Corn-Fed Ribeye (S$ 88++) was everyone’s favourite at dinner.

The ribeye really needs no additional seasoning. The flavours are so fragrant, especially when they are grilled over a flame. To taste the true goodness of these gorgeous meats, have them on its own. However, if you love a good sauce with your steak, a lighter garlic herb butter sauce makes a perfect pairing.

Lastly, from the Greater Omaha range is the 220g US Prime Cut 100-Days Corn-Fed Tenderloin (S$ 78++). This is probably the most tender Tenderloin; most tenderloin cuts leave us chewing forever because they are more often than not tough. It is impressive how the meat was still able to sustain most of its moisture and natural flavour.

Sprinkle some salt, have it with a béarnaise sauce and eat it alongside Opus Bar & Grill’s garlic mashed potato. The mashed potato itself is worth a mention. We never had a more buttery and smooth version that goes so perfectly with the tender meat.

If you do not fancy red meat, which happens when dining in big groups because surely someone doesn’t take beef, that’s when the new items on the menu will be your answer.

The Roasted Sakura Chicken (S$ 48++, good for 2 pax) is a beautiful and comforting option; rotisserie chicken always does the trick. The chicken is roasted with rosemary. The seasoning on the skin of the chicken turned out to be wonderfully crispy and fragrant, and the white flesh is succulent and tender.

What turned out to be the underdog was the Wild Sea Bass (S$ 36++). We never thought that we would fall in love with a fish dish in a steak restaurant, but this sea bass did just that. With a nice sear skin-side down, you get a good crisp on the side. It sits on top of clams, black mussels, artichokes and vine tomatoes in a very sweet seafood broth.

We were blown away. And we are afraid when we next return to Opus Bar & Grill, this dish of Wild Sea Bass might distract us from the steaks.

We ended our dinner on a high note with the Bombe Alaska (S$ 14), which was on its own a sight to behold. When the flames caught onto the white fluffy meringue, the top layer started burning while the ice cream on the inside remained intact; it was show stopping.

The meringue sits atop cream cheese ice cream and mandarin orange sorbet. The intense creamy ice cream sure balanced out the lighter and more refreshing sorbet well.

Opus Bar & Grill’s popular ‘Steak with Free Flow of Wines‘ dinner special is reintroduced and is happening now from Sunday to Thursday every week. With a purchase of any steak from S$ 58++ on the regular dinner menu, you get free-flow house wine – pick from red, white and sparkling.

On Fridays and Saturdays, you get 50% off a full bottle with every purchase of a steak.

We’ve never heard of any better steak promotions in town. This is it; dinner dates are set. At OpusBar & Grill, you get the best of both worlds with the U.S. Greater Omaha Prime Grade Steaks and their Australian Steaks selections.

Quote “LICOPUS50” to get 1 FREE dessert at Opus (worth up to $ 14++) with a minimum spending of $ 80 on your total bill. Valid for our first 50 readers and limited to 1 redemption per table only.

Judging from the queue at the famous BAKE Cheese Tart, Singapore is still going gaga over these Hokkaido-style baked cheese tarts.

Photos of a new Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart at Jurong Point have been making their rounds on social media this week. We are sorry to burst your bubbles – the Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart at Jurong Point is not by BAKE.

BAKE is not opening a second outlet in the West of Singapore. At least not yet.

This new Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is actually a new concept by Secret Recipe, which many people may know it for its cheesecakes and cream cakes.

The yellow signage with black font looks like BAKE at first sight. But if you look closer at the logo, you will realise that the Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart kiosk at Jurong Point is not by BAKE. It is misleading, to say the least.

We understand from our sources that the new cheese tart concept will open in the second half of September 2016. The store is located at basement one of Jurong Point 1 (near to Singapore Post Office and Famous Amos).

Singaporeans live for great food, and we are not ashamed of it. Even when we travel, we have a list of go-to places – famous cafes, Michelin-star restaurants and what-have-you.

We know too well those moments when indulging in BAKE Cheese Tarts on the streets of Tokyo and enjoying a pizza in PizzaExpress in London, and wondering when would be the next we could savour them again.

Luckily for us, Singapore has more and more international brands setting foot on our shores, and we are infinitely closer to satisfying all our cravings.

Now, let us take a look at the 11 Popular Overseas Dining Concepts That Opened In Singapore in 2016.

#1 BAKE CHEESE TART

Originating from Kinotoya confectionery store in Hokkaido, BAKE Cheese Tart was founded by Shintaro Naganuma who strongly believes that freshly baked tarts taste the best and that only fresh ones can be sold to its customers.

BAKE is hence very well-loved for their cheese tarts for they are baked on the actual premises – nothing but fresh, fragrant, warm cheese tarts.

#2 BURGER JOINT NYC

New York’s cloak-and-dagger burger restaurant – Burger Joint – made its debut in Singapore on 03 May 2016, with its first outlet at Amoy Street. Proudly deemed as a burger restaurant without all the fluff of gourmet burgers, Burger Joint makes genuinely unpretentious burgers that have left the harshest of critics in awe.

They have been known to refer to their burgers as anti-gourmet burgers. Although there is nothing wrong with a tasty gourmet burger, the main idea of the burgers at Burger Joint is to just serve up some honest and delicious burgers – maybe even the best one you will ever have.

#3 GREYHOUND

Greyhound Cafe, famous fashion and lifestyle cafe in Bangkok, will be opening in Paragon come November. With the brand’s background in fashion and graphic design, the new café is set to impress – in terms of both interiors and food.

We are looking forward to seeing the space, the specially designed staff uniforms, as well as being able to try the food that people often rave about. One item to look out for is the popular Greyhound Famous Fried Wings.

#4 HONOLULU

Honolulu Café was founded in Hong Kong during the 1940s, and it started out as a humble eatery selling Hong Kong-style coffee and tea and baked confectionery. The casual eatery is renowned for their flaky egg tarts, pineapple buns and Hong Kong milk tea.

Local chefs from Hong Kong’s Honolulu Café are sent to Singapore to ensure that the dishes served here remain similar to the flagship store’s.

No trip to Honolulu Cafe is complete until you have tried their signature Honolulu Egg Tarts (S$ 1.70++ each). Each palm-size flaky pastry encases to-die-for sweet soft egg custard; the dough had been frozen overnight and folded into many layers to achieve a crisp shell.

I See I See has been gaining popularity for its handcrafted ice pops since its opening in its home country. The signature ice pop flavours include Earl Grey Tea with Pistachio, Raspberry Cheesecake, Kiwi and the most Instagram-worthy Strawberry Hokkaido Milk.

Not only are these ice pops perfect for the humid weather in Singapore, they are also pretty enough to be featured on your Instagram feed!

Kyushu Pancake’s famed pancakes are made with seven different grains that are grown in Kyushu – the gem of Japanese agricultural regions. The result is a premium pancake mix that gives the perfect texture and unique taste.

The 42-seater outlet in Novena opened on 11 May 2016 and offers the Kyushu Butter Milk Classic Pancake, Salted Caramel French Toast, Matcha Azuki Waffle, Egg Benedict Pancake and Matcha Montblanc. Signature drinks that are served include Matcha Latte, Fresh Fruit Tea and Special Milk Tea.

#8 PIZZAEXPRESS

This popular pizza chain has over 500 outlets in United Kingdom, various European countries, Hong Kong, India and the Middle East. PizzaExpress is now open in Singapore and sits on the basement level of Scotts Square.

The doughs are all made fresh on the spot, and you can watch the chefs in action via the open kitchen.

Classic pizzas include a variety of different flavours on a slightly thicker dough. They are smaller in size, which is great for solo diners. We had a taste of a popular flavour – Lava (S$ 20) which is topped with olives, burrata cheese, chilli oil, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and passata, and fresh basil.

#9 POPBAR

Popbar, the famed popsicle store from The U.S., is opening in Singapore at Plaza Singapura. We tried Popbar’s popsicle when we were in New York City and trust us when we say that they taste as good as they look. With the opening of Popbar in Singapore, there is no need to fly all the way to the States to have a taste of these Insta-famous popsicles.

The store will be housed in Plaza Singapura, and from what we understand, it is set to open within the next few weeks.

#10 SMOOTHIE HOUSE

This is Taiwan’s most popular and bestselling shaved ice store that sits along Yong Kang Street. Singapore’s Smoothie House imports the blocks of ice directly from Taiwan so you can be assured that the quality and taste will be exactly like the original snowflake ice in Taiwan.

Mango Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta (S$ 12.90) is their signature and probably the most ordered item in their Taiwan stores. Many reasons to love this bowl, indeed. Why, just look at the generous chunks of fresh mango atop the powdery snowflake ice. And a panna cotta to top, too!

A little fun fact: every piece of mango is sliced with precision to ensure a consistency in the size for the best dining experience, and the number of mango chunks is even on each side! Also, every bowl of Mango Snowflake Ice actually comprises almost a whole mango fruit.

Other than the much-lauded egg tarts, the old school bakery is also selling pineapple buns (bolo buns), doughnuts, egg rolls, pastries and local cha chaan teng dishes.

Tai Cheong Bakery’s egg tarts are priced at S$ 7.60 for a box of 4.

There are so many criteria to picking the right venue. For one, it must be able to accommodate your desired number of guests. Some venues are suitable for a small-scale wedding; some have ballrooms that are so huge they can sit your entire clan.

For most weddings in Singapore, they are held in the ballrooms of hotels. This is mostly to accommodate bigger groups. The ambience of hotel ballrooms plays a big part in creating the mood for such a grand event too.

We picked The Fullerton Hotel Singapore for many reasons, with the primary reason being its rich history. Being patriotic Singaporeans ourselves, we had wanted something iconic of Singapore to hold our wedding at, and The Fullerton Hotel couldn’t have been a better choice.

Our #BradMelWedding was held on 17 Jun 2016 and 18 Jun 2016 – the first day for solemnization and the second for the banquet.

Our package with The Fullerton Hotel Singapore includes the venue for the former and the ballroom for the latter, and a 2-night stay at the Loft Suite.

While most may place their emphasis on the venues, we didn’t think the rooms were any less important. In fact, the Loft Suite proved to be the perfect bridal suite for its totality. It boasts a space of two stories, leaving us with ample room to move around – for makeup, photography, and occasional visiting guests.

We also loved The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s grand ballroom with the elegant flight of stairs, which impacted the overall atmosphere of the march-in.

But of course, the banquet team deserves a mention for their dedication. All our guests were singing praises of our 5-course lunch and we couldn’t be happier to know that everyone loved the food.

.

We had a cocktail reception complete with a dessert table. The pastry team lined up a series of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s signature kuehs, and it was a sight to behold. Our guests were stuffing themselves silly even before the lunch began!

For our 5-course lunch, we opted for individually plated courses as we wanted something neater. The starter was a Trio Combination of Lobster with Fruits Salad in Thai Style, Roasted Suckling Pig and Pan-fried Scallop stuffed with Shrimp Paste in Spicy Fragrant Salt.

This was followed by the Mini Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, Oven-baked Chilean Sea Bass marinated with Miso, Asapargus and Cherry Tomato; Stewed Pork Rib in Honey and Fermented Bean Sauce; and the Eight Treasures Fried Rice with Foie Gras wrapped in Lotus Leaf.

The general favourites were the Mini Budda Jumps Over The Wall and the Chilean Sea Bass. So if you are ever going to hold a wedding banquet in The Fullerton Hotel, you might want to consider including these two dishes in your menu!

That feeling you get when your guests were full of praises for the menu you arranged was one so satisfying. It was surely comforting to know that everyone enjoyed the food from the reception!

Once again, thank you for being part of our Big Day, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore! It was a choice we never regretted.
