Run the ZA: A 5k zombie apocalypse run

Celebrate Halloween with this inaugural run that benefits local non-profits including Special Olympics Hawaii and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). All ages are welcome to participate, whether in human or zombie form. Runners under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants will be grouped into three categories: Competitive (including CrossFit), Fit or Family. Adult tickets are $65, tickets for children 12 and younger are $30. Spend a fun-filled Halloween with trick-or-treating, a dolphin show and a spooky movie, with the Makapu‘u coastline in view. The day includes a kids’ costume contest (ages 5-13), special touch pool exhibit, and a showing of the family-friendly animated film “Paranorman” in the evening. Prizes will also be given away, including annual passes to the park. The event begins at 2 p.m. and the park’s restaurants will be open until 3:30 p.m. After that, BBQ plate lunches of steak and chicken along with hot dogs will be sold at the Makapu‘u Meadows. This kid-friendly event on the waterfront features food trucks, free keiki activities including face painting and a balloon artist, a Foodielicious costume contest for adults, keiki and pets, and a keiki dance party. Bloomingdales will be passing out free frozen yogurt from 5-6 p.m. to keiki in costume, and adult Halloween drink specials will be available at the Makers & Tasters bar. Sunset Mele on the Rooftop

This month’s event takes on a Halloween twist complete with trick-or-treating, a costume contest and haunted house fun for the entire family. Oahu residents and visitors are invited to enjoy a full evening of entertainment in a safe and secure environment sponsored by New City Nissan and featuring live performances by 2015 Na Hoku Hanohano music award nominee Aidan James and the group Pineapple Jam beginning at 5:15 p.m. The night will conclude with a special screening of the feature film “Maleficent” in the ballroom beginning at 7 p.m. HCC’s in-house culinary team will be serving up popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos and bentos. Additional vendors at the Sunset Mele Market Place will offer snacks, beverages, and beautiful arts and crafts for sale. Admission is free. Parking at the Hawaii Convention Center for the event is $5 per vehicle. Outside food, beverages and coolers will not be allowed, however, guests are welcome to bring low beach chairs, mats and blankets.

The festivities kick off with a Kawaii Kon and Comic Con Honolulu cosplay runway show featuring family-friendly costumes. Families are then encouraged to trick-or-treat at participating stores’ “treat stations” (while supplies last) for children under 12 years of age and dressed in costume. Finally, the center offers Halloween Cruz Night with Bleizn’ FX car enthusiasts’ costumes inspired by the model year of their car on display. A pirate-themed event will be geared for keiki 12 years of age and under with a Halloween Pirate’s Ship display, craft table station, games and more. Keiki can participate in the Pirates Revenge Ride, Pirates of the Caribbean Jumper or Keiki Kopter in exchange for one can of food or $1 that will go toward The Salvation Army Hawaii. A keiki costume contest will be held at 6 p.m. at the Marina Courtyard Stage for children 12 years of age and under. Three age group categories (5 and under, 6-9 years old and 10-12 years old) will be included with three judging categories (Cutest, Best Homemade Costume and Most Original). Three prizes per each age group category will be awarded. It will be followed by a Pet Costume Contest with one winner per three judging categories (Cutest, Best Homemade Costume and Most Original). All keiki and pet costume contestants must register by 5 p.m. at the Waterfront Stage. Lahaina Halloween Keiki Parade
4:30 p.m.-5:45 p.m. along Front Street on Maui [map]
Keiki and parents are invited to take part in the 37th Annual Halloween in Lahaina Keiki Parade. Participants are asked to line up on the corner of Front and Papalaua streets at 4:15 p.m. The parade will proceed along Front Street, past the Wharf Cinema Center and ends at Lahaina Banyan Court. Once they reach their destination, keiki will walk across the stage to show off their costumes and provide parents an opportunity for pictures. They will also receive Halloween treats and a congratulatory ribbon and partake in keiki activity tables that will be set at the Banyan Tree Park. Sponsors have arranged to have several activities such as face painting and balloon designs for the parade keiki. There will also be entertainment by the Lahainaluna Band. Mark and Judy Ellman will serve as grand marshals. Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and wife Anne, and Lahaina bagpiper Paul Tangonan will also take part.

For one night only, Think Fast and It’s Not Wolves will play frightful, terrifying, and completely unscripted stories and games, all inspired by audience suggestions. Performers beware, for each game of the night will have a twist of torture for all to bear witness. Hallowballoo

This year, Hallowbaloo Music and Arts Festival is expanding its playground. Festivities will stretch from Chinatown to the historic Hawaii State Art Museum (HiSAM) and surrounding streets with the main stage located on HiSAM’s front lawn. Complimentary trolleys will shuttle festival goers from Nuuanu Avenue to Alakea Street and back. Admission to the main event is free, but the night includes several paid events like HiSAM Hallowbaloo Ball ($80), a celebration inside the museum with food and drinks, and a “marathon” at 5:45 p.m. that involves costumed revelers traversing a mile-long course to raise money for local arts non-profits ($16/$26). Hulaween Costume Contest and Party

This year’s theme is Comic Con, and guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite sci-fi or comic book character. Nightmare at Dole Plantation III

For the third year, Dole Plantation transforms from family-friendly to downright fright-inducing. Nightmare at Dole Plantation 3 will feature two terrifying exclusives: House of Nightmares by Nightmares Live Haunted Attraction, a horrifying haunted house (even larger than last year!) that features myriad terror-inducing images that haunt our dreams; and Nightmare Express – Tales from the Other Side, a spine-chilling train ride accompanied by hair-raising ghost stories by Lopaka Kapanui. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Through Oct. 15, individual pre-sale tickets for the haunted house are discounted to $11, while pre-sale tickets for the train are $8 when purchased online. Starting Oct. 16, pre-sale tickets purchased online are $13 for the haunted house and $10 for the train. Haunted Plantation

Located in an outdoor history museum in Waipahu that has been featured on SyFy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” show, visitors are taken through authentic plantation homes to meet spirits and hear stories from the village. The tour involves dozens of actors in costumes and special effects makeup, as well as intense audio and lighting, extremely low visibility, strobe lights, and fog. Admission costs $15 general admission, $20 fast pass, and $30 VIP front-of-the-line access. Due to the nature of this event, children must be 13 and over, and adult supervision is required for children under 16. The ticket booth opens at 6:15 p.m. and visitors are advised to come early. Keiki Halloween Costume Contest

First-, second-, and third-place winners in each category will receive a merchant gift basket and a $100, $50 or $25 Royal Hawaiian Center gift card respectively. One black night, near an old abandoned plantation town by the sea, two cousins lost in the darkness unknowingly cross a supernatural threshold. Windward Community College Theatre 260 students perform an original play by Susan Stanton, a collection of eerie and haunting local ghost stories. Due to adult language, situations and themes, this play is recommended for ages 16 and older. Running time is one hour. Hawaii Symphony Orchestra presents Disney in Concert: Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”

Join the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (HSO) for a spooktacular Halloween concert as a classic, animated PG-rated film encounters the magic of a live symphony performance. Conductor Stuart Chafetz will lead the HSO as it performs Danny Elfman’s original film score while “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is projected in all its frightful glory on the big screen. Original dialogue from the film, starring Chris Sarandon as Jack Skellington, Catherine O’Hara as Sally and Ken Page as Oogie Boogie, will be seamlessly broadcast during the screening. Costumes are warmly encouraged but not required. Celebrity judges will be on-hand to judge the fairest and foulest of them all at both performances. Ticket-holders can enter the contest beginning one hour before show time. Judging closes 15 minutes prior to the performance. Winners will be announced from the stage. Categories include: funniest, most original, best duo/group, and best The Nightmare Before Christmas costume. A Best in Show prize will be awarded to the one horrifying (and conceivably dazzling) costume that receives the greatest praise from judges.
