Oahu residents, get your plastic bags from stores while you can, because starting Wednesday, they’ll be gone.
Businesses will only be allowed to pass out compostable plastic bags, paper bags, or reusable bags.
Honolulu is the last county in the state to make the transition.
If any stores are caught giving away plastic bags, they could face a fine starting at $100 a day.
There are some exceptions, however — restaurants, lunch wagons, bakeries, pharmacies and dry cleaners can still give out plastic bags.
But for most other businesses like supermarkets and retail stores, either you bring your own bag or the stores can also give out biodegradable plastic bags, paper bags, or reusable bags. But businesses said those types of bags often cost more and aren’t as cost-effective for them.
