2015-02-10

Why, good morning dear readers!

Welcome to 2015 and along with it, yet another bonanza of music, theatre and dance performances specially geared to entertain the listless, educate the curious and vex the indecisive.

As they do sometimes say (or at least, as Emile Zola once did say), “”The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.” What, indeed, have our intrepid artists in Singapore been working on lately?

The Kent Ridge Common is proud to present to you a compiled listing of music, theatre and dance events for 2015. Please do note that this list will be frequently updated for your benefit.

Happy 2015!

RAW Moves presents the 2015 edition of its annual repertory platform, R.e.P, at the Goodman Arts Centre, Black Box from 26 to 28 March. Expressing the powerful presence of the body, the double bill is comprised of Ebelle Chong’s (Singapore) intriguingly austere SSLD:7 and Chang Chien-Hao’s (Taiwan) uproarious Floating.Box.

RAW Moves is a National Arts Council Seed Grant recipient from April 2013 to March 2016.

“With its increasingly strong performances season after season, RAW Moves is well on its way to becoming one of Singapore’s celebrated contemporary dance companies.”

- Lee Mun Wai, The Muse

Standing, Sitting and Lying Down: 7 (SSLD:7) by Ebelle Chong is a continuous study of the 3 neutral bodies in space – to stand, to sit and to lie down. By re-looking at the definition of choreography and movement, the interest is on the 3 neutral bodies in space and their in-betweens. The relationship between each body, their surroundings and what each “picture” says forms the basis of research. SSLD:7 is part inspired by the choreographer’s 7 years as a stay-at-home mum (hence the number 7 in the title) and part inspired by the events unfolding around us. SSLD was first created in 2011 at the choreographic workshop Screw of Thought. It was a 6 minutes and 40 seconds work-in-progress work.

Theatre: W!LD RICE, “imagiNATION!: Public Enemy” (April 9-25)

In April 2015, W!LD RICE will present a gripping new production of Public Enemy, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s powerful classic about truth, democracy and the tyranny of the majority.

What happens when you speak your mind and your entire community turns against you? Do you stand by what you believe is right? Or do you tell your colleagues, your family and your friends what they want to hear?

In a town that’s preparing to market itself as a world-class resort spa, Dr. Thomas Chee (Ivan Heng) discovers that the water supply is riddled with bacteria. He resolves to go public with the information. It’s a decision that pits him against his entire community. Overnight, he finds himself drowning in a storm of protests from the government, media, businesses, and even his family. Suddenly, Dr. Chee is the enemy of the people – the man who insists on telling truths that no one wants to hear.

One of the world’s most powerful classics, Public Enemy asks thought-provoking questions about democracy and the freedom of expression. What does it mean to hold firmly to an unpopular opinion in a world where it’s easier to conform? Can one man stand up to the tyranny of the majority? When does bravery become naivety?

Henrik Ibsen’s electrifying satire comes to life under Glen Goei’s direction. Exploring issues of politics, principles and power, Public Enemy tells a timeless tale of courage and corruption that has challenged and entertained audiences for over a hundred years.

The production is part of W!LD RICE’s year-long imagiNATION season, which marks the company’s 15th anniversary and coincides with Singapore’s own jubilee celebrations.

Each imagiNATION production takes inspiration from the five stars of the Singapore flag. Public Enemy kicks off this theatrical odyssey by challenging the easy assumptions associated with ‘Democracy’.

Singapore Repertory Theatre’s annual Shakespeare in the Park season returns for the ninth time to Fort Canning Park from April 29th May 24th with a stunning production of The Tempest.

“The Tempest is Shakespeare at his magical, musical, spectacular profoundest best. It is about every single one of us and the paths we take in life but expressed in sheer theatricality so we are swept away in a journey of the spirits which is entertainment in its true sense” says director Braham Murray, OBE and one of the founding Artistic Directors of The Royal Exchange in Manchester.

This year’s production will be the grandest to date, with the tallest set ever built in Singapore.

The cast features one of the finest actors in the UK, Simon Robson, as Prospero; Julie Wee as Miranda; and Tim Wan as Ferdinand.

Spread your picnic blanket under the stars and immerse yourself in the magic of The Tempest, Shakespeare’s final play. Get drawn into Prospero’s world of sorcery and magic where nothing is what it seems.

SRT is rolling out several educational initiatives for The Tempest, including assembly talks and masterclasses for teachers conducted by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The Tempest will be performed Wednesday through Sunday from 29th April with dedicated student nights on Fridays. The gates will open at 6.30pm for those who wish to choose their favorite spot to picnic. Performances commence at 7.30pm.
