WANTED: Safe Dog Treats that Won’t Harm Our Dogs!

We’ve heard the story before, a dog has allergies and can’t handle commercial dog treats, so his dog parent comes up with a homemade recipe that the dog loves and doesn’t cause the itchies.  Friends start giving the treats to their dogs, and then an idea is born – ‘maybe I should sell these!’

Well, this is similar to the story that inspired Scout and Zoe, a 5 year old and a 13 year old who had allergies to everything from a cow (food, treats, rawhide, and bones).  Their mom created treats that they could enjoy and it kind of grew from there.

We had an opportunity to try three of their treats and I want to give you the honest truth behind each treat.  Be prepared, because I’m going to be blunt here!

Scout & Zoe’s Sweet Potato Chips

The dogs loved the sweet potato treats.  They look like Taro chips, but without the seasoning or salt – I was tempted to try them, but decided to stop at smelling.  They’re for the dogs.  The dogs sat nicely and chewed them up only to return for more.  Cool!  I knew these would be a hit, because I give them frozen sweet potato doggy ice cream from time to time.

The pros – these are dehydrated (keeps the good stuff in tact), USA sourced sweet potatoes; I love that I’m giving our dogs something healthy; and it’s easy on Sydney’s waistline.

The cons – read the next section.

Scout & Zoe’s Chicken Jerky

The dogs loved the sweet potato chips until I introduced them to the chicken jerky treats.  After that, I tried the sweet potato chips again and they sat them aside and waited for more chicken jerky.  We went through the package right away.  I know, I should have held back, but I was surrounded by wide eyed, cute dogs who wanted more.

The pro – our dogs love them, it’s made from USA sourced, boneless chicken breast

The con – the package was too small and three dogs went through it in about 10 minutes

The worst part of these treats (actually, the blame goes to me and the dogs) is that I was trying to capture video of the dogs eating them.  They were downing them so fast that I could barely keep up and the one video that captured them the best had to be edited down to remove the part when Rodrigo went after Blue, all growling and teeth baring, to grab his treat.  Blue got out of the way and I stood their swearing – on video.  So professional; well behaved dogs.  *eye roll*

Scout & Zoe’s Natural Antler Dog Chew

Of course our dogs loved these and I was in love with the fact that they weren’t splintering all over the place and they last longer than other chews we’ve tried.  I know that some veterinarians believe that these can break teeth – but our dogs actually do well on antlers.

The pro – it lasted for a week before it was lost it (it’s actually in the yard, I know where it is – Rodrigo hid it and he pulls it out from time to time to chew on it some more); it didn’t splinter, risking injuring their digestive tract, and it occupied Blue before bed time, settling him down.

The con – we only had one and refereeing three dogs with one antler isn’t how I want to spend my day. Although they did a good job sharing.  That surprised me.  Note to self, buy one for each dog.

All in all, Scout and Zoe’s has found a new customer and fan in our three dogs and I’ll be placing an order for the chicken jerky treats and looking out for them to be available in family style bags for those of us living with 3 or more dogs.  You can check them out on Facebook to learn more!
