Why did you start traveling?
I don’t think there’s anything unique about why I started traveling, but as for why I pursued the lifestyle I now live, that’s a different story. When the economy collapsed back in 2008, I hadn’t yet found my professional footing, so I moved to Shanghai to teach English – and to moonlight in journalism. An internship with a local blog led to a paying gig to CNN, which led to a lucrative career as an online freelance writer and, finally, to me becoming a professional travel blogger. But this took many years, of course, and it’s a lifestyle that keeps evolving.
What is the most important during your travels?
For me, the greatest benefit to traveling is constant inspiration for my writing and photography, so the most important thing for me is to constantly be outside my comfort zone, having new experiences and meeting new people, and to always seek beauty and truth, even in the chaos. The freedom to create is a privilege and I see it as my duty to take constant advantage of it.
What is the most important experience that you had during your travels?
It’s tricky to pin down one specific experience – maybe that’s because I haven’t had “the one” yet? In general, the most empowering thing about my travels so far is how resilient they’ve made me. I face difficulty, disappointment and hardships on the road much more often than I let on in my writing, and my ability to push through these tough circumstances has strengthened me as a person.
What is the most beautiful place that you have been to?
Easy. The Lençóis Maranheses, is northeastern Brazil.
What do you avoid when you travel?
I avoid falling into too many trends and traps. I’m a very idiosyncratic person, and being on the road empowers me to express myself and my desires in an extremely individual way. To me, the idea of chasing the exact same experiences as others, whether it’s attending ubiquitous events and festivals, staying in the “coolest” hotels and visiting cliché tourist attractions, is antithetical to travel. Obviously, I do all of these things in moderation, but I really feel bad for people whose travel centers around them.
What is your biggest travel dream?
I turn 30 next year, and I would like to celebrate by visiting Antarctica – my seventh continent. Aside from that, I would love to take each of my parents, and my little brother, on a trip. I took my sister to Thailand a few years ago and it was one of my favorite experiences ever.
What are you favorite travelers? Which blogs do you read?
I don’t really read other blogs – I prefer to get my travel information from driver, more objective sources, such as Wikitravel. As far as my favorite travelers, I don’t really want to answer that question. I have made many dear friends within the community of bloggers, and I wouldn’t want to accidentally leave someone out and hurt their feelings. I also have my share of haters – I don’t need anymore of those!
