Benedict Cumberbatch is having the best April ever!
(to steal a line from VH-1, sort of)
Benedict began the month on a combined personal vacation/working business trip to New York City with his wife, Sophie, and his child, Christopher. He was spotted at DeMaterie (an opera), a concert by LCD Soundsystem, The Crucible which starred 5 of his previous co-stars (Hinds, Okonedo, Ronan, Norton, Camp) and a fellow actor he has previously admired (Whishaw), an art museum, and Dry Powder, an off Broadway play at the Public Theater.
He filmed a piece for Jimmy Kimmel Live to broadcast with the Dr Strange trailer, completed some studio voice looping work for Dr. Strange, and spent two days filming on the streets of NYC in front of many onlookers and a large contingent of paparazzi from a variety of sources and agencies, who captured lovely photos of his wife, assistant, and friends visiting the set towards the end of Saturday’s work. On the second day of filming, he popped into a comic book store in full costume resulting in a photo and video that has traveled around the world, reported on favorably by many media outlets.
He left NYC the minute filming was completed, flew overnight, and reported to the Sherlock set with the rest of the cast on April 4th for a table read and some night scene filming. He’s been filming season 4 of Sherlock every weekday so far this month.
On April 4th, StudioCanal (producers behind Kiera Knightley’s Pride and Prejudice for one) announced a financial investment in Benedict’s production company, Sunny March and released a video of him chugging a litre of water in a single shot to celebrate (because his fans will literally watch him drink water).
More production photos were released for Hollow Crown: Richard III, reminding people all over the world how badly they want to see this production, so please just broadcast it already! Broadcast dates released on April 4th, and we’ll finally get to see it in May 7, 14, and 21. BC fans worldwide already scrambling to find livestreams.
It is announced that Benedict will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live, in the US, to premiere a Dr Strange trailer, sending fans around the world scrambling for livestreams once again.
Benedict is announced as one of the stars who will appear on the BBC Two’s Shakespeare Live event on April 23rd. More livestream scrambling, and it is announced that it will be shared around the world in cinemas the same way Hamlet and other UK productions have been.
Benedict and Sunny March announced as co-producers of Guantanamo Diary, the story of 45 year-old Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a man who was a suspected terrorist and has been incarcerated at Guantanamo bay for 14 years without ever being charged with a crime or having the opportunity to defend himself in court.
Dr. Strange trailer premieres to a worldwide audience on Kimmel (via assorted livestreams), and screenplay writer C. Robert Cargill gets on twitter to share the moment with fans. Within 24 hours the trailer has more than one million views on 2 youtube channels. #DoctorStrange trends top five on twitter worldwide. “Teach me” becomes an unexpected, but incredibly meaningful promotional catch phrase for an unfinished movie that’s still 7 months from premiere. Skeptical MCU fans enthusiastically jump on board the CumberStrange train after their 2 minute conversion ceremony. (Welcome, one and all, I recommend watching Hawking and Starter for 10 to pass the time until November).
Benedict is announced as the voice of the Grinch in a new animated production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Films, the partnership behind the Despicable Me/Minions projects.
Please note, today is April 16th. He still has 14 days left, and could conceivably announce a new project on each of those days. Yikes. World Domination is coming.
Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t perfect. He is not a saint who is burdened under the weight of his golden halo. But he sure as hell isn’t Satan either, no matter how many poorly researched, utter horseshit posts people want to make about him on Tumblr.
He is a good, decent man who works hard every time he shows up to any thing he has committed himself to, no matter how simple or small it might be perceived to be by others.
He is the first to admit he makes mistakes, big ones, but, as he said himself, he tries to get back up again and “Fail better” (to butcher the Samuel Beckett quote). He does not deserve the lies that are being spread about him (no one ever does, if you need to damn someone you should be able to do it with truth). I’m not sure what prompted the negative attention this week, but honestly, we should all stop caring and giving it a spotlight.
You see, here’s the absolute truth, and hopefully, my last blog entry on this matter:
NONE OF THIS BULLSHIT WILL AFFECT BENEDICT. None of it. The majority of the world is not on tumblr. The majority of the world is not on twitter either. The majority of fans who will walk into the theatres for Dr Strange in Oct/Nov and turn on their televisions for Sherlock in January will have NO IDEA what happened this week on tumblr. No media outlets are paying any attention to this basic tumblr fandom wank.
So, let’s all turn our frowns upside down, stop responding to these hate wankers, and focus on the wonderful work (and lets be honest, the pretty pictures) of this man that most of us genuinely respect, and the equally wonderful artwork, edits, and gifs he inspires in his fans. Personally, I’m going to step away from my computer, load another Ngaio Marsh book onto my phone and put in another two mile walk listening to BC do another dozen voices and accents, male and female. What about you?
If you reblog, feel free to add a photo of BC from the last 12 months. If we have to have a long ass post, let’s make it a damn pretty long ass post. (Should I have put this under a cut? I can edit it).
{another not short post from TDH productions}
As @thisdancingheart would say, I reblog the truth.
All of this. Tumblr is Tumblr, what has been happening to Benedict happens to any public figure, any piece of negativity is turned over and over and made to be worse. Thus is the nature of the internet.
Doctor Strange fans will surely be stoked,as are the fans of Benedict.
We know he will be amazing. We already know how amazing he is. Nothing can touch him.
What a perfect post, so well said and so true! Thank you! (I would attach a pretty pic, but I’m on my nook and can’t attach pics to someone else’s post on that.)
Great post and remember Sue Perkins had to come off Twitter for a while because, after it was rumored she would take over as Top Gear Presenter after Jeremy Clarkson was sacked, she got DEATH THREATS.
There is a certain type of person on social media who takes out the frustrations of their daily life on celebrities because they can do it without repercussions. It’s sickening but until the companies running these sites step up their rules it will continue to happen to everyone at some point.
Ben has become World famous and therefore is a target for these miserable shits, and someone else will be their main focus soon. These people are fickle, and, it appears, stupid. I mean look at the haters. They are united by their utter idiocy and will believe anything as long as it’s negative. It doesn’t even have to make sense. I have no doubt similar people in other fandoms are just as dim.
Anyhow, thanks for a fantastic post and have a good day.
