The iconic office chair series from which this Kardiel Executive Padded Mid Back
reproduction takes its inspiration was originally developed in 1969. The seat and
back support features a continuous section of Italian Leather upholstery stretched taut between two metal ribs. If it sounds similar to the 1958 lider series it is. The main difference is the individual “floating” cushion pads which are hand stitched onto the back and seat. The Mid Back version features a lower profile back height with 2 attached “floating” pads and 1 seat pad cushion added for additional comfort and support. Genuine Italian Leather was selected as the upholstery of choice for this reproduction. This series was originally know as the Aluminum Series for good reason. This reproduction frame is made of polished aluminum in keeping with the original appearance intent of the design. This is a departure from the chromed metal used often on reproductions. None of the details were overlooked, from the distance of the ribbed stitching to the period correct Atomic metal ball of the height adjusting lever. We understand and offer you the intricacies of the original office series design in this quality reproduction.

About the Leather
The two leather types available for use with the office lider series were
standard leather from china and an upgraded leather from Italy. The leather grade we selected for construction of the Kardiel Lider chair is Italian and the highest grade available for the office chair series. A price comparison will likely reveal a similar cost for our Italian leather version when compared to the available standard “genuine leather” versions.

Mid Century Office Chair – 1969 witnessed the release of the padded executive aluminum office series. The padded executive series is considered a prestigious version of the 1958 cushion free lider. It was originally designed by Charles and Ray as an exterior chair. The “hooded” base design was introduced this same year and was the only base ever available on the padded series. The changes on the 1969 version are pretty obvious. The structure is the same in that the seat and back rest is still made of a continuous single section of Italian leather upholstery stretched taut between two metal ribs. Individual short rectangle shaped “floating” cushions were stitched to the back support, 2 for the mid and 3 for the high back version. A square individual cushion was stitched over the seat support. A more plush version of the Aluminum series was born. Created for those in the higher ranking corner offices? Perhaps.
Charles Eames, an American architect and designer was greatly influenced by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. Eliel’s son Eero (creator of the Ball Chair) would later become a partner and friend of Charles. In 1941, Charles married Ray Kaiser also an American artist, designer, and filmmaker who, together with her husband Charles, is responsible for many classic, iconic designs of the 20th century. Their work displayed the new technique of molded plywood products, including the 1945 DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal with plywood seat) and the plywood Eames Lounge Chair 1956. From the beginning, the Eames furniture has usually been listed as by Charles Eames. In fact in the 1948 and 1952 Herman Miller bound catalogs, only Charles’ name is listed, but it has become clear that Ray was deeply involved and should be considered at minimum an equal partner in bringing the classic furniture pieces to life.
