The iconic office chair series from which this Kardiel Lider Mid Back reproduction takes its inspiration was originally developed in 1958. The seat and back rest is made of a continuous single section of Commercial grade leatherette upholstery stretched taut between two metal ribs. This allows it to subtly conform to the shape of the user’s body and makes it comfortable for long periods of sitting. Upgraded Italian leather was selected for the upholstery of this reproduction. This series was originally know as the Aluminum Series for good reason. This
reproduction frame is made of polished aluminum in keeping with the original
appearance intent of the design. This is a departure from the chromed metal used
often on reproductions. None of the details were overlooked, from the distance of the ribbed stitching to the period correct Atomic metal ball of the height adjusting lever. We understand and offer you the intricacies of the original
office series design in this quality reproduction.

leather appearance at a lower cost. The leatherette upholstery used on this
reproduction of the 1958 classic is heavy grade and approved for both residential and commercial office use. Leatherette is easy to care for, simply wipe it down occasionally with warm water.

Mid Century Office Chair – The lider
1958 was the start of the office chair series. This chair had its roots far from the office however. It was originally designed by Charles and Ray as an exterior chair. The private residence the exterior chair was created for was being designed by none other than Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The seat architecture was significantly different than what would be considered a normal chair. The design was akin to Le Corbusier’s design concept of the now popular LC1 saddle club chair or the LC4 chaise lounge chair. The seat and back rest is made of a continuous single section of leather or leatherette upholstery stretched taut between two metal ribs. This allows it to subtly conform to the shape of the user’s body and makes itcomfortable for long periods of sitting.

Charles Eames, an American architect and designer was greatly influenced by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. Eliel’s son Eero (creator of the Ball Chair) would later become a partner and friend of Charles. In 1941, Charles married Ray Kaiser also an American artist, designer, and filmmaker who, together with her husband Charles, is responsible for many classic, iconic designs of the 20th century. Their work displayed the new technique of molded plywood products, including the 1945 DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal with plywood seat) and the plywood Eames Lounge Chair 1956. From the beginning, the Eames furniture has usually been listed as by Charles Eames. In fact in the 1948 and 1952 Herman Miller bound catalogs, only Charles’ name is listed, but it has become clear that Ray was deeply involved and should be considered at minimum an equal partner in bringing the classic furniture pieces to life.
