Team with neutrals and simple lines, or think of all the other ways in which you could use them! This staple is amenable to whatever takes your fancy; match or mismatch, it’s up to you.

Try a pale cable-knit over a leather mini. Pair thick wool with pleats, or a slouchy grey number with skinnies. Allow your cut-offs to peek out from under your sweater, adding opaque tights for the cooler days. Better still, wear it as a dress with over-knee boots! Pull on a beanie, a beret or a fedora, and pick up an oversize bag. Jump into some booties or heels (don’t forget your ankle socks), and you’re done.

Add heels to a pencil skirt, and you’re smart but comfy for work. For a bohemian slant, wear a statement gold necklace, or some large plastic hoop earrings, and splash your lips with scarlet. Go for grunge in partnership with ripped jeans. Glamorise with silver threads, a metallic sheen, or an embroidered white roll-neck, like the one spotted at London Fashion Week. Pair it with distressed denim.

Colour-match jumper, midi, maxi and pants, or the strongest shades in floral or other patterns. Opt for a brown, tan or maroon cable design, and break it up with a wide leather belt. Search for (and acquire) unusual cuts, appliqués, and bold prints – large spots can hold their own here. Contrast chunky wool with light material such as thin cotton or chiffon, or wear your oversize sweater over a dress. It’s ideal for layering, so start with a loose shirt beneath it, but don’t stop there.

Be snug in a cowl, or chic in a turtle neck. Plump for patterned knitting in ribs, herringbone, stripes, and textures, worked in mohair, alpaca, bouclé, and wool blend, as well as synthetics and cotton. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, a faux fur or full length camel will fit easily over a baggy garment.

You can’t beat oversized sweaters for warmth, cosiness, comfort, and adaptability. We think this autumn style staple is so practical, that you’ll still be rocking it next spring!
