1. Borneo International Marathon

In 2008, Sabah appeared on the marathon map when the Borneo International Marathon was held for the first time. It attracted 529 runners that year. Since then the BIM as grown in size and stature and now is a notable marathon on the South East Asian marathon calendar that attracts runners from far and wide. The Marathon is held along the scenic coastal roads of Kota Kinabalu. 2015 will be the 8th edition of the BIM, also dubbed, “The Beautiful Run”.

2. Angkor Wat International Half Marathon

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Held inside the ruins of this UNESCO listed World Heritage Listed site, the race was first introduced in 1996 by Yuko Arimori, the first Japanese woman to win a marathon medal at the Olympics. Angkor Wat is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia, and is also Cambodia’s prime attraction for visitors from all over the world. Runners at the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon will get a chance to see some of the magnificent remains of several capitals from the Khmer Empire, dating back to the 9th-15th century CE.

Today, the competition is also a charity event, with attendance by international participants, and landmine victims alike. According to the organisers, the race aims to appeal to the international community to support the “ban on the use of antipersonnel mines”. Funds raised through the event go towards helping landmine victims with rehabilitation, as well as other local issues such as education and healthcare programmes. This year, Manulife will be the principal sponsor for the event for a total of 5 years, until 2019.

3. Danang International Marathon

Da Nang, Vietnam

Experience one of the most scenic marathon courses in Southeast Asia. Da Nang’s coastline stretches 30 kilometres, renowned for its pristine beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal-clear blue water. According to US Forbes Magazine, Da Nang is one of the 6 most beautiful beaches in the world by its idyllic beach with smooth sand and a gentle slope. In addition, the green environment, less pollution, and traffic restriction of Da Nang got it listed as a first class city.

4. Bali Marathon

Bali, Indonesia

The friendly local environment and comfortable ambience of Bali will impress you during your stay on the island. With “Pushing the Limit” as its main theme, Bali Marathon welcomes thousands of participants from over 40 countries for its races. Runners have the unique experience of running through rice field and small villages. You will get cheered on by local children dressed in ceremonial outfits and also hear soothing music of the traditional Balinese Gamelan through the course. There is no better way to experience the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of this extraordinary Indonesian Island than through the Bali Marathon.

5. Laguna Phuket International Marathon

Phuket, Thailand

The Laguna Phuket International Marathon was started in 2006 in to help bring tourists back to Phuket after the December 2004 tsunami had severely affected tourist arrivals to Phuket in 2005 and early 2006. The ‘Run in Paradise’ presents runners a picture perfect course along the coast of northwest Phuket Island. Along the route you can spot sights like a typical Thai village market, a rubber plantation and beach and sea views. Laguna Phuket has been the host and title sponsor of the event since its inception. In addition to their sponsorship, Laguna Phuket has also used the marathon to raise funds for charity.
