2016-01-24

The official numbers are in and Baltimore closed out the Blizzard 2016 with a few records, as well as many other places. Over 2 feet of snow was more than a full season’s worth in a single day. Even though the storm was spread between Friday January 22 to Saturday January 23, the single storm, calendar date, and single day snowfall records were broken.  If you are measuring, Below are the local snow totals from area weather spotters. On a regional scale, even New York City recorded 26 inches in Central Park. When everything is tallied up, this should be the all time top storm on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS).

With a seasonal total of 30 inches for the season, BWI is now at the upper edge of my seasonal snowfall outlook. This makes for the third season in a row with above average snow in Baltimore as I suggested. But any more, and we will overshoot my expectation. However it might relate to something else interesting  I will detail in my next report.

Baltimore Snow History

Measuring Notes:

Snow drifts: Take an average of 3 different locations on your property

Drifts are over 4 Ft in spots.

Dry Snow Vs. the wet snow expected allowed it to fluff up more initially. *This kept it from weighing down trees and power lines too.

Snow compression: The snow is so deep, it will pack down under its own weight and paper lower today

Sublimation: Snow that doesn’t melt could skip the water phase and go right to gas (similar to evaporating)

Records at Baltimore’s BWI

25.5″For the calendar day. Former January 23 record = 11.5″ in 1935

29.2″ For the storm! Former top storm on record was 26.8″ on February 15 to 18 2003.
