I'm not a huge crafter. But I do love making these.
So I hope you will, too.
Moms, grandmas, teachers, aunts, uncles, and dads will all love them. They'll be the biggest hit on your filing cabinet at work. They will make heading to the refrigerator a pleasant treat (especially if you were heading there for broccoli).
They are the easiest picture gift you'll ever make.
Really.
So let's get into it. Let's make them.
Step 1: Gather your supplies
You will need:
Magnetic business cards
Modge Podge
4x6 picture collage with four pictures on it
Scissors
And that's it. I purchased this package of cards from Office Depot. However, they are usually sold out when I go in to buy them, so I've been looking online for them. You can get the same package of 100 for 10 bucks cheaper on amazon.com. The link is below.
ProMAG 2 x 3-1/2 Inches Adhesive Business Card Magnets
I use the Picasa 3 free software to make my collages.
Make sure the pictures that you use for the collage are all cropped to an exact 4x6 size. Then they will fill up the 4x6 picture collage perfectly even.
If you don't have software that allows you to make collages, you can also make them online with PicMonkey for free. Click here for a tutorial on how to do that.
I had my 4x6 collages printed from a local one hour shop (okay FINE it was Wal-mart), but if you can print them from your computer then yay! Lucky you!
Step 2: Cut each mini picture out
Step 3: Trim down the business card magnets
I did this by placing the picture on the business card, tracing the edge, and snipping off the excess. Very technical, I know.
Step 4: Peel off the white paper, and stick on the picture.
Do this CAREFULLY. Once the picture meets the sticky-ness, there will be no un-sticking. Nope. None.
In my last crochet post, Emily said my fingers were pretty. And then I said that maybe I would get lucky from doing this and perhaps find my identical hand twin. (I hoped you just clicked on that link. I think it only works on a real computer. But. It's worth it. Go to a real computer and watch it.)
Step 5: Apply modge podge
If you've never applied modge podge to a picture before, you might think you're ruining it. But I promise, it dries awesomely. Also, I'm using the matte finish modge podge. Because I like the matte finish look.
Step 6: Wait for the modge podge to dry, and you're done!
I've made a ton of these magnets for myself and given them out as Christmas gifts to extended family for the past two years. It's wonderful because they are inexpensive but thoughtful and cute.
And they're pretty sturdy. I found one in the dishwasher after the wash cycle was over (thanks Little Miss) and when I pulled it out, it was fine.
All the modge podge had been washed off, but it wasn't ruined. I was pretty impressed. Way to be strong, little magnet.
I've also stuck on a sturdy white piece of construction paper and let the kids decorate their own. Those would be perfect for gifts, as well.
Also, why not take pictures of your child's artwork and turn those pictures into little magnets. Then the artwork could still decorate the fridge, but it wouldn't be so cluttered.
Yup, that will definitely be my next project.
So, hurry up. Get those magnets, make your collages, and get some cute picture magnets done in time for Mother's Day! Grandma will love them!
