These findings are nothing entirely new but they reaffirm the fact that dogs are good for mankind. Their effect on longevity, happiness and our overall well-being is not pseudoscience!
Dogs encourage their owners to be physically active, as well as provide companionship that will keep them grounded and engaged. The simple things that dogs bring into our lives significantly reduce the risk of death by 33 percent among people living alone with a dog versus those without.
Meanwhile, risk of death by cardiovascular disease is reduced by 36 percent! Chances of heart attack is 11 percent lower too!
Dogs also benefit multi-person household, although to a lesser extent. Risk of death falls by 11 percent while risk of cardiovascular related death is found to be 15 percent lower.
The sample came from Sweden’s national database assessing people between ages 40 and 80 years old. The sample population is composed of 3.4 million Swedish individuals over the course of 12 years.
“A very interesting finding in our study was that dog ownership was especially prominent as a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group reported previously to be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death than those living in a multi-person household,” said Mwenya Mubanga, an author on the study.
