If you’re tired of last year’s look and want to give your home a makeover, but you don’t want to spend a fortune in the process, there are some very simple ways to refresh the décor without breaking the bank. Here are a few ideas to enthuse you and encourage you to go for a new-look interior.

A fresh coat of paint

You can update a room by painting a single wall, or alcoves if you have them either side of a fireplace, or simply refresh the doors and window frames with a coat of gloss paint in a different colour. Another cheap alternative is to buy stencils and choose a pattern to feature on one wall that will coordinate or complement any new soft furnishings.

Living and dining areas

Very often, sofas and chairs begin to look worn out after a while, particularly if they are used a lot, but there’s no need to replace them or even to spend money on fancy new covers as a simple throw in your favourite fabric, perhaps in the Pantone colour of the year, will bring them right up to date. In case you didn’t already know, for 2015 that colour is Marsala (like the fortified dessert wine) – a kind of deep terracotta, with more brown than red. Add some bright scatter cushions in a complementary colour to the throw and it will feel like you have a whole new sofa.

Changes to room lighting can also make a huge difference to the ambience in your living and dining areas, and it needn’t cost a fortune. Add a contemporary floor light or a matching pair of table lamps or use stylish pendant lighting as a way of revitalising interiors. Changing your artwork and mirrors can also have a dramatic effect – contemporary prints are relatively cheap to buy and retro mirrors are back in a big way. In fact, consider the case for recycling and upcycling – a quick trip to a charity shop or jumble sale might result in some great value purchases, and there are some fabulous ideas around for repurposing particular items. Why not dye your existing curtains and cushion covers, for example, instead of buying new ones?

Repurposing ideas

Besides looking for second-hand items, you can have great fun and teach yourself new skills by reusing unwanted things in a new way. For instance, old sweaters can be turned into amazing things to smarten up your interiors, including lampshades, vase covers and cushion covers as well as lots of different kinds of clothes (children’s dresses, leg warmers and mittens). An old wooden ironing board can be turned into a side table, and you can even use old T-shirts to create a pretty little bedroom rug. Lots of great ideas are available on pinterest.com.

Put on your thinking cap, as they say, and take a critical look at the small changes you could make that will brighten up your décor without having to spend too much. You might be surprised at the opportunities to revitalise your home.
