Brand new cars are expensive; we all know that, and put that alongside their rapid depreciation rate and it can leave you looking for other options. You may be considering opting for a used car and if that is the case this article may be of some use to you! You can easily buy a used car with hidden damage that can give you costly problems or even one with a dubious past.  However, that said, it is possible to find that perfect nearly new car and our guide sets out to help you do just that:

1) The Test Drive

When it comes to the test drive, make sure you take the car out on local roads and also ideally the motorway. Driving in different environments lets you get a good feel for how the car responds and performs. On local roads, you can feel how the car shifts and responds to sharp turns and more importantly, you will get a good idea on the condition of the brakes with stop-and-go. When you get on to the motorway, make note of how the engine runs whether smoothly or not. Whilst on your test drive, keep your eyes and ears open. Make sure to note any unusual engine noises and check out electronics such as the radio and air conditioning to make sure everything is as it should be.

2) Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

VIN cloning is a scam where sellers replace the VIN of a stolen car with one that is legally registered.  This type of fraud can easily be avoided by decoding the VIN of the vehicle in question.  Checking a VIN decoder chart is a quick and easy way to check a used car’s VIN info matches up with what’s in the vehicle title and records.  This can be done online for free here and can save you a lot of future hassle.

3) The condition: Inside and Out

The overall condition of the car is fundamental to the overall value of the car so make sure to check both inside and outside carefully. Be sure to inspect the interior upholstery carefully, along with any repairs to the exterior of the car.  Look for discrepancies in the paintwork.   Always open the hood and take a good look at the engine and parts, even if you aren’t an expert. Dirty and rusted parts are usually a strong indication that there may be trouble ahead.

4) The Leak Test

While you’re on a test drive, take a moment to park in a clean area on the road, and let the car run for a minimum of 30 seconds. Then, move the car a short distance and do a visible inspection for any fluids at the point where the car was running. Black fluid might be an indicator of leaking oil, green fluid may indicate a leak in anti-freeze, and pink fluid may indicate a leak in the transmission. Any leaks must be addressed before purchasing the car or it may lead to expensive repairs.

5) Vehicle History Report

This is probably one of the most important points! A vehicle history report can you help you reveal title problems, ownership history, service points and previous accidents, large or small. These reports can be available from dealers or of they are not make sure to order a report online.

6) Research Reviews

Before you commit to buying the car, research the make and model and have a read through owners reviews. This may alert you to any recurring / common problems with certain makes and models of cars.

7) Price

As well as researching reviews of the car, check out prices of the same model and specification on a range of websites so you can get a clear view of the market value.  Make sure you take into account the car’s age and any extras which come along with it.

8) Mechanic Inspection

Many consumers don’t take the time to have a mechanic inspect their used car before purchase, which can lead to more expensive car maintenance later on. Having a car inspected before purchase by a professional can be well worth the price. After all, a mechanic is the person best equipped to help you discover hidden problems and also assist in determining the car’s value. If you know a mechanic, take them along, alternatively, companies such as the AA offer this service.

9) Certified Vehicles

Purchasing a certified pre-owned car is always a wise choice because it offers the buyer an extra level of quality assurance. Many car dealers, such as Available Car offer vehicles with warranties which extend beyond the initial new coverage.

The key to avoiding the buyer’s remorse trap and feeling assured with your latest car purchase is to take your time.  Don’t be afraid to double check everything.  Research the marketplace, find out more about the potential pitfalls and faults that your chosen car model may face in the future and go over that car with a fine tooth comb.  A car is an investment which needs to be reliable.  Get it right and you should have no regrets.
