I have naturally… messy hair. Somedays it curls in beautiful corkscrews, other days it’s a hot mess of frizz. Most days, especially in the fall and spring and, usually, in the winter, I blow my hair out straight with a dryer and round brush and then flat iron after. In order to do that, I’ve tried plenty of product.

While at CES, I sat down with LA-based stylist Jeremy Clark of Jeremy Clark Salon and asked for a a few tips to help us curly, frizz-heads get the glowing straight shine that still has incredible body.

5 tips for styling your own hair with volume

Invest in a good dryer. Jeremy and I met at the Panasonic Beauty area of the Panasonic ‘booth’– I use that term lightly, it was more like a showroom of Panasonic products. Jeremy was using Panasonic’s new Nanoe technology dryer, which includes a second blower that distributes ions at a cooler temperature than the dryer tunnel itself. The ions come from the air around your hair and encircle your hair particles, offering more moisture to the hair and leaving it softer and smoother than I’ve ever seen my hair. Jeremy noted that there was no need for product or oils to blow out my hair, the Nanoe dryer took care of the hair product job. Panasonic is also debuting a Nanoe flat iron, which uses the same technology on both sides of the ceramic panels to blow more ionic moisture into the hair.

Clip your hot hair into big rolls. As he worked, I commented to Jeremy that to get the big, trendy, voluminous curls not only seemed like extra work after I’ve already flatironed and straigthened, but I just didn’t have the talent to do it. He pointed out that it wasn’t so much an extra step, just a quick part of the blow out. As shown here, he didn’t use curlers, instead as he blew out each section he used clips to clip a big roll to my head, and left it there, moving to the next section.

Pay attention to your natural part. It’s important to note that as he was curling the hair into rolls, he did it around my natural part so that it would fall more naturally. Of course, you often get more volume when you dry against the part, but it isn’t always as ruly. (This is my opinion, not Jeremy’s).

Let it cool. This is something I’d never heard before. In order for your hair to keep it’s shape and volume, after drying into the rolls, let your hair cool for a few minutes (A ha! That’s what the cool button on the dryer is for!) Letting it cool in it’s shape will help it to adjust to that shape when you remove the clips.

Tada! Notice the shine and soft texture? That’s the Nanoe technology at work.

Let it out. As you let out the clips, let the hair fall naturally, then gently finger-comb to get it where you want it. For prolonged stay, use a hairspray such as Paul Mitchell Extra-body Finishing Spray, 11 Ounce. (My recommendation, not Jeremy’s. I didn’t catch which product he used, but this is the one my stylist uses at home.
