Johnny Fontane’s Deep Dish Pizza Sydney
[Invite] The Stanley Street precinct is now home to a couple of new venues and Johnny Fontane’s is the one with the Deep Dish Pizzas. Adjoining both, Stanley’s and The Long Goodbye. Newcome Johnny Fontane’s is a surprisingly large venue, with a cigar/outdoor area to boot – downstairs sits their bar, outdoor/el fresco dining area and there’s a dining hall upstairs too. Johnny Fontane’s has a golden age theme going for it and the walls are covered with pictures of Chicago Mobsters and Jazz singers. The furniture is a mix of diner and italian villa-esque while the outdoor stuff is Hampton-esque.
It’s raining today but you can purchase cigars downstairs and pop up here in their “cigar room” aka outdoor space aka where it’s legal. We can see this being a cool outdoor place for a drink when the weathers better.
Johnny Fontane’s is buzzy tonight inspite of the inclement weather – filled with plenty of diners who’ve popped in for their deep dish pizzas. Wine, Italian eats and that tangible buzz in the air.
Johnny Fontain’s Deep Dish Pizza is about an inch and an half deep.

You come to Johnny Fontane’s for their (not quite) Chicago Deep Dish ($28 each). We say not quite Chicago deep dish because the pizzas aren’t as deep and we’ve been told that this is due to cooking times – real Chicago deepdish takes about an hour to cook and theirs is a slightly thinner version of it and comes in about 30 minutes. Johnny Fontane’s has the honour of being the first of its kind in Sydney CBD and the most easily accessible for most.
Even though, this isn’t as deep a pizza as the Chicago version. The Deep Dish Pizza was plenty for 2-3, probably even 4. We’d say its probably enough for 4 as we were full on about 2 slices (we did also have a charcuterie platter). It’s a hefty hunk of cheese, rocket and marinara sauce with each bite. Divided 3 ways, and its a $9.3/head and 4 ways, its $7 bucks for your dinner. Quite cheap we thought.
Pina Colada at Johnny Fontaine’s. Nice and Malibuish.
Oreo Cannolis.
If you’re hankering for deep deep chicago pizza that you won’t find anywhere else in Sydney, Johnny Fontane’s is the place to hit in Sydney. The price is right, its cheap and you’ll have a pretty good time. Housed in the easily walkable Stanley street in Darlinghurst, its a short skip away from the CBD.
