Carlton grew up in Orange, Texas and was raised by his father, Steve Carlton, who is a local attorney, his mother, Dale Carlton, who is a retired Little Cypress Elementary School teacher, and his sister, Dr. Eryn Carlton Lucas, a local licensed clinical psychologist.  He graduated from Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School in 2000 where he was an accomplished musician, singer, and member of the Mock Trial team.  Carlton attended The University of Texas, was a Longhorn Band and Longhorn Singers member, and graduated after only three years.  He then graduated from The University of Florida and was a member of the Gator Band.

Carlton joined the United States Air Force as a first lieutenant, Medical Service Corps officer, after graduating from the University of Florida.  He spent nearly four years on active duty stationed at the 17th Medical Group, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas.  He was responsible for disaster management and group practice management as a health administrator.  Carlton also deployed to the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group, Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait for six months in 2009 and helped coordinate aeromedical evacuation missions.  He joined the U.S.A.F. Reserve, 433d Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in late 2009 when he began law school.  Upon graduation, Carlton joined his father's family law and criminal defense practice in his hometown of Orange, Texas.  He later joined the Orange County District Attorney's office as the juvenile prosecutor where he currently handles juvenile misdemeanor and felony crimes.  Carlton was encouraged to run for Orange County Judge by Orange County employees who knew of his background in the military, law, administration, disaster management, healthcare, and leadership.  He will resign from his prosecutor position when he takes office as the next Orange County Judge. Carlton, holding the rank of major, continues to serve as an active reservist as a joint medical planner at the 953d Reserve Support Squadron, Joint Enabling Capabilities Command, Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.
