### DUTIES:

As a Certified Ambulatory/Surgical Data Coder, you will perform a variety of technically complex
duties to review and analyze ambulatory inpatient medical data, code medical diagnoses and procedures,
and provide technical and educational assistance to the professional staff. The work requires an extensive
knowledge of ambulatory coding (as certified by a nationally accredited organization with a minimum of one
year’s experience), accreditation references and complex medical terminology, anatomy and physiology in
addition to an overall knowledge of DoD and Army medical regulations. You will oversee the activities and services of the Ambulatory Coding section in meeting Department of Defense (DoD), Department of the Army and Data quality goals and standards in all ambulatory coding procedures, quality levels and productivity expectations. You will examine case histories of all injury diagnoses to determine nature, causative agent, how, when and where injury was sustained. You will analyze medical documentation in either the paper health record and/or by use of an automated system to ensure completion and accuracy of disease and injury diagnosis, acuity of care, and procedures. Uses a variety of references, software/hardware programs to code all diagnosis, procedures and/or services either manually or with the use of automated programs.

### QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

**Experience required:**

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: performing the duties such as making recommendation to improve procedures for compiling and retrieving medical information, coding complicated medical records, gathering basic statistical computations, identifying trends for preparing reports and educating staff on coding practices. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-07.
