ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Youth on Air grant. All applicants must be between the ages of 16-30 (inclusive).

The CKUT News Headline Editor will be responsible for producing a 5-minute news headline package, 4 days per week (Tuesday-Friday), to be aired CKUT’s flagship community news show, Off the Hour, and distributed online as well.

Working under the mentorship and direction of the CKUT News Coordinator, the News Headline Editor will research, write, record, and produce headline news in accordance with CKUT’s news policy and mandate. CKUT has a daily community news show, ‘Off the Hour’ (Tues-Friday, 5-6pm), which provides grassroots coverage of local news and events in Montreal with a mandate to provide a social justice and community perspective. While our main area of focus is Montreal, the News Headline Editor will also cover stories on a national, and sometimes international scale.

Among the different news beats the Headlines Editor will cover will include: labour, anti-racist issues, education and the student movement, indigenous issues, environmental movements and issues, feminist news, and immigration issues – all with a focus on local perspectives and stories.

ABOUT RADIO CKUT:

CKUT 90.3FM is a not-for-profit campus-based community radio station in Montreal. As a campus/community radio station, CKUT’s mandate is to provide an essential service to those in the Montreal community whose needs are not met by mainstream commercial radio. CKUT functions not only as an alternative to the status quo, but as a viable community resource. CKUT serves as a training ground for the community and student populations, and in doing so, provides an essential educational and informational service to the greater Montreal community.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

-Excellent knowledge of current affairs and community activism in Montreal

-Excellent time management and communication skills

-Excellent writing skills (English)

-Ability to multi-task efficiently and work independently

-Ability to work effectively under tight production deadlines

-Capacity to work non-hierarchically and collectively

-Willingness to learn new technical skills, including sound recording and sound editing techniques and programs

-Ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers in terms of their background, skill level, and capacity to learn

-Experience with online research, blogging, and social media

-Commitment to anti-oppression principles

ASSETS:

-Bilingualism: French and English

-Community radio or independent media experience
