Unsolved Mysteries

Of all the sacred sites, Machu Picchu is amongst the most mysterious. Truly there are more questions asked than answered regarding its purpose and ultimate demise. Five square miles of astrological perfection sits majestically on top of a misty mountain in the Andes (8000 feet). Located two thousand feet above the rumbling Urubamba river, the city remained untouched and undiscovered until Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham explored it in 1911.

Our Amazing Itinerary…

Day 2 – May 23 Lima – Cusco – Sacred Valley

Upon arrival you will be met by our Peruvian guide. Here you will board our private bus for a scenic drive to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This will be a slow and relaxing day giving us time to acclimate to the higher altitude and adjust to our Andean Mountain surroundings. We’ll have 3 days to explore and experience the sacred sites of this beautiful valley.

On the way to the Sacred Valley, we will stop at the colorful market and ruins of Chinchero. This market offers a wonderful opportunity to buy woven goods, wall hangings, rugs, pottery, and many other types of handicrafts, as well as wonderful photographic opportunities. Observe the traditionally dressed campesinos coming to barter and sell their produce at the market.

We’ll visit an artisan’s workshop. where expert weavers demonstrate the process of dyeing alpaca, llama, sheave, and wool textiles using natural and organic vegetables and minerals in the way the Quechuas (Incas) did hundreds of years ago.

We will also explore the ancient city of Chinchero which was occupied by the Wari culture well before the Inca’s. Observe the remains of shrines and rock sculptures of puma’s and the wall with large trapezoidal niches big enough to stand up in.

For lunch, we were treated to a Peruvian feast at Wayra Restaurant at Sol y Luna which is included.

Wayra is no ordinary restaurant. Offering a culinary and cultural experience appealing to the five senses, Wayra introduces guests to the flavors of the Sacred Valley while entertaining with colorful local traditions, such as a Peruvian Paso horse performance, ceramic workshops, dance, music, and theater.

In the afternoon the group will participate in an important ancient religious ritual and ceremony of offering to Mother Earth – Pachamama, known by the Inca or Quechua people as Ayni, the Universal law of Reciprocity.

This evening, we will rest and drink local coca tea, which will help our bodies adjust to the altitude.

Diner and rest at the hotel.

The Inkas used them as a botanical laboratory for experimenting on plant domestication and acclimatization. From there, we move onwards to the town of Maras (elevation 3028 meters) to visit the biggest salt pans in the region that have been mined continuously since the Inkan Empire.

Two hundred steps lead up terraces to a double-jamb gateway and the Temple of Ten Niches, a long wall with odd protuberances. Above this is the unfinished Temple of the Sun, considered one of the masterpieces of Inca stonework. Six giant monoliths of pink rhyolite are perfectly slotted together with thin slices of stone and oriented to glow with the rising sun.

Connect with the Unu or water element at Tambomachay balancing male and female, Puca-Pucara, and the huge ceremonial center Sacsayhuaman, marked by the huge stone paw of the Puma, Qenqo Inca site where the Puma awakens.

The pre-Inka site of Sacsayhuaman is high above the northern edge of the city, and forms the head of the puma and the Qoricancha temple forms the center of the grid. Sacsayhuaman looms over Cusco to the north with three ramparts of zigzag walls that run for nearly 300 meters on its north side.

We will feel the energy and honor each of these sacred places. Visit the Temple of The Sun – “Qoricancha”, the most important religious complex of all the Inkan Empire.
