Senior Mark Felix won top honors during INPA's contest judging Friday. This photo from his submitted portfolio shows Wisconsin firemen taking a break during a controlled fire set for a training session.

Journalism senior Mark Felix is the Indiana College Photographer of the Year, the Indiana News Photographers Association announced Friday.

Senior Caitlin O’Hara was runner up in the contest, which is based on the entrant’s submitted portfolio of work.

"I feel very honored to have won INPA's CPOY. It's always humbling to win an award that so many IU photojournalism alumni have won and whose work continues to inspires me,” Felix said in an email from California, where he is an intern with the Orange County Register. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I'm very thankful for both professors and alumni who have helped mentor me in the past years and continue to push me.”

INPA came to Ernie Pyle Hall to conduct judging for the college contest Friday and for the pro contest Saturday. The professional Indiana Photographer of the Year is Dave Weatherwax of the Jasper Herald.

Associate professor Jim Kelly has arranged for INPA judging to be conducted at the school for several years in a row. This gives students a chance to watch and listen to judges as they consider each entry on a projector screen.

This year’s judges were RJ Sangosti, a staff photographer at The Denver Post; Carlos Javier Ortiz, a Chicago-based documentary photographer; and Barbara J. Perenic, a staff photographer at the Columbus, Ohio, Dispatch.

The judges offered portfolio critiques for students in the afternoon after the judging, and they conducted a show-and-tell presentation of their own work and experiences Friday evening.
