I don’t consider myself to be the creative type.  I’m not sure why that is, perhaps it’s my desire for perfection?  My fear of failure?  And I don’t usually ‘nail it’ when I try to recreate something I’ve found on Pinterest!

But something has changed in me.  I guess my frugality is starting to supersede my lack of know-how and fear of failure because I’m taking on more projects that I do myself and here are my reasons why…

4 Benefits for Tapping into Your Creativity

Save money.

Learn a new skill.

Customize the project to suit your needs and desires.

And the best reason…to get your husband’s input and help.  You’re working together in a common goal and you’re connecting and building your friendship.  My husband cut the wood for the project I’m sharing below and he became my hero.  He revelled in that title!

A few weeks back I received a gift card to Hobby Lobby for Christmas.  Now, I don’t do much shopping for crafts or for home decor because I don’t have money to just spend it willy-nilly.  But, I had a gift card which meant no guilt for me if I spent it frivolously!

Instead of creating a new hobby for myself, which meant having money and time that I don’t have, I decided to find something at the store that would help me in my walk with the Lord- a reminder of His goodness in my life when my circumstances tell me otherwise.  But there was a problem.  I couldn’t find anything that would fit in my small space.  So, I enlisted my husband for his help and opinion and his handiness.  This made for a fun little date seeing how we were kid-free for the weekend!

I posted a picture of my so-called masterpiece on Instagram and Facebook and lo and behold, women loved it and asked where I got the ‘pattern’ or ‘steps’ do this because they wanted one too!  How cute is that?  My non-craftiness inspired other women.  Go figure.

Since I didn’t have plans to show you how to do this step-by step, please extend me grace as I walk you through it now that it’s completed.

Start with the chalkboard.  This will determine the overall size of your scripture board.  My chalkboard was pre-cut with scalloped edges.  Make sure your chalkboard is non-porous and will work with chalkboard markers unless you want to use chalk.

Step 2.

Choose your fabric and batting.  I purchased a yard of fabric and I had plenty left over.  The batting that I chose was a thin, blanket-like layer.

Step 3.

Cut a piece of wood for the dimensions that would work in your home.  I wanted a fabric border of about 2 inches around the chalkboard so you could see the pretty fabric, thus this determined the size of the board that needed to be cut.

Cut the batting to fit on top of the board.  Lay the fabric on top of the batting and then fold it over and staple the fabric on the back of the board using a staple gun.

Step 5.

Staple the fabric down in the center (where you’ll place the chalkboard) then cut out the fabric and batting that is in the middle.  Glue wood blocks on the large piece of wood, then glue the chalkboard to the wood blocks.

Step 6.

Screw in wire to hang your scripture board!

Now you can write whatever scripture you’d like with chalkboard markers!  Right now I’m dealing with combating fear, so I’ve written scripture to help me deal with this emotion.  If you need a reminder to be loving and kind, or maybe your husband does :), then find a verse you can focus on and write it down!

The beauty of this project is you can change the verse whenever you want so you can be encouraged and equipped by the Word of God!  And don’t forget the four other benefits you get when you tap into your creativity!

Now it’s your turn.  Are you interested in any of the following?

✔ Decorate the perfect space for your family

✔ Make your own skincare products  (I’m interested in this seeing how most of what I find will either cost me an arm and a leg or they’re filled with garbage.)

✔ Take beautiful photos

✔ Create gifts from scratch

✔ Nurture your creativity

Or may you don’t even know where to begin?

Do you ever look at the bare wall in the den, that tired and sagging couch, or those tatty tablecloths, and feel absolutely overwhelmed by the thought of tackling any of them?

Which one do you start with? And then once you’ve decided, how do you know which steps, instructions or advice to follow? Just getting to the point where you’re ready to start can often take so much time and effort!

It’s frustrating, because you know just how satisfying it can be to create something of your own – that sense of accomplishment and fulfillment can’t be beaten. What you need is for someone to pull together everything that you need to get started, to make it as easy and painless as possible.  Doesn’t this sound wonderful?
