Baba Ramdev, best known for his myriad of yogas and mind-bending contortions, recently moved on to greener grounds, with his Patanjali Ayurveda brand of products. However, it seems that Patanjali’s products are also made using one of the Baba’s many supernatural powers. In this instance, Time travel!
Officials of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department happened upon two 1-kg packs of Aawla Murabba, a product of Patanjali Ayurveda, with the manufacturing date being shown to be October 20, 2016, while the expiry date is October 19, 2017. The sample was taken from a retail shop located in Kalyanpur Ring Road, in Lucknow.

FSDA officials said that the product being an ayurvedic medicine, does not qualify as a food product, however, in order to judge the quality of the food products sold, samples were taken from 5 different shops of the city. Samples taken for testing included Soan Paapdi, ghee made from cow’s milk and turmeric powder as well.

Dr. Shiv Kumar Verma, drug inspector and directorate of Ayurveda, UP said,
“Furnishing wrong information about the product ultra vires the provisions of the Drug & Cosmetic Act.”
He also stated that a sealed sample of the product is being sent to the laboratory for testing. Information about this has also been sent to the Director of ayurvedic services, Uttarakhand (Dehradun).
In spite of such a blatant disregard for food safety and quality check, Patanjali certainly doesn’t seem to be doing too bad. The Yoga guru went so far as to state that Patanjali’s atta noodles would soon overtake Maggi as the top noodles brand in the country, and the company would overtake all multinational firms in the consumer goods space, except Hindustan Unilever in the next few years.

“Patanjali atta noodles will soon oust Maggi as the top noodles brand in the country. Currently from about a 100 tonnes, our production of atta noodles will be increased to 300-500 tonnes. Barring HUL, we will overtake all other multinational companies. These companies are taking money out of the country,”
With words such as these, it seems Ramdev is certainly as great a Yogi as he is a businessman and contortionist, isn’t he?
