The successful candidate is expected to develop an applied research program that supports range based cow/calf production. Research responsibilities will relate to but not be limited to: strategies for both drylot and pasture based beef herds which reduce winter feed costs for beef producers in the northern Great Plains. Possible research areas may include winter grazing of cover crops or crop residues, as well as supplementation strategies which either improve forage utilization or reduce dependency of harvested forage. It is expected that the new hire will seek and secure extramural funding to support such a research program. Collaboration with research center scientists and main-campus faculty, and publication of research manuscripts are expected. The successful candidate will engage commodity and stakeholder groups to allow for successful dissemination of research results and to ensure clientele needs are being met by research activities. Advising graduate students and participation in graduate committees with main-station faculty will be encouraged. This position reports directly to the Center Director. Position Responsibilities: This includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities.
Develop an innovative applied research program that supports the beef industry by developing techniques which reduce winter feed costs
Collaborate with on-campus and other REC research faculty; as well as extension specialists on research and educational programs
Actively seek and secure extramural funding to support research program
Publish research results in both scientific and other formats
Present scientific findings to both scientific and stakeholder groups
About Central Grasslands Research Extension Center:
Central Grasslands Research Extension Center is located in south central North Dakota in the Missouri Coteau. The Center has four full-time research faculty studying areas including Animal Science, Range Science, and Forage Agronomy. Central Grasslands Research Extension Center was created to address the following research priorities: 1) To increase the carrying capacity of rangelands though fertilization, weed control, and grazing management of native and tame grasses to allow full season use and maximum utilization of the land resource; 2) To stabilize grass production and discover how best to compensate for the vagaries of the weather as it influences forage production in a dryland agriculture; 3) To identify the impact of livestock disease problems in different management systems; 4) To explore increase use of crop residues and by-products for the maintenance of the cow herd; and 5) To demonstrate management techniques and to advise operator of results obtained. To accomplish these objectives the Center manages approximately 1300 head of beef animals each year, including 450 breeding females. The land base for these operations includes 5335 acres, of which the majority is native and improved pasture.Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in animal science, range science or closely related field of study
Ability to lead an independent research program as well as work as a member of a team to solve agricultural problems with applied research
Willingness to work with commodity groups, stakeholders, university research and allied industry personnel
Experience managing technical/support staff or other employees
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Documented ability to prepare research proposals requesting extramural funding.
Experience with publication of research results in both non-technical and peer-reviewed formats
Valid drivers licensePreferred Qualifications: Demonstrated leadership of an independent research program.
Working knowledge of northern Great Plains rangeland and livestock management practices
Demonstrated experience working with commodity groups, stakeholders, and allied industry personnel
Proven ability to secure extramural funding
Experience mentoring graduate/undergraduate students in research activities
Previous research experience at a Research Extension Center
