The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) at the HSRC undertakes statistical surveys and research to monitor indicators for science, technology and innovation in South Africa, R&D, human resources in science and technology and related human mobility data.

The two flagship surveys, the National Research and Experimental Development (R&D) Survey and the South African Innovation Survey, provide important data for analytical studies and the production of national science and technology (S&T) indicators on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

CeSTII provide an exciting environment for growth in terms of research on development of indicators, statistical analysis and innovation policy research as well as international engagements in these areas.

The incumbent will be appointed on a 3 year contract and seconded to the CSIR in Pretoria to

assist in the development of a large Java Enterprise system for the HSRC.

Key responsibilities:

Form part of a team of software engineers/developers, analysts and project managers;

Contribute technically and develop software on a large and complex project, using web-

based and Java EE technologies;

Co-responsible with the rest of the team for quality assurance and testing;

Contribute to sprint planning sessions;

Assisting with the training of users within the HSRC on the use of the system;

Facilitating hand-over to HSRC support and maintenance staff after completion of

development.

Key requirements:

A BSc or Honours degree in electronic engineering, computer science or information

technology would be highly advantageous;

A minimum of three years’ experience in Java EE development and engineering,

preferably on large/complex projects;

Experience using test-driven development and agile methods (SCRUM) is required;

Furthermore, good knowledge of the following is required:

Software development/engineering;

Ability to find creative technical solutions to problems.

Web application architectures;

Java EE;

Hibernate/JPA/ORM; and

XML.
