Placement: Kathmandu, Nepal. Several travels to Helambu (and Langtang) are expected

atmosfair wants to hire a local Project Manager who is expected to bring the Climate Trek, Nepal's first climate friendly trekking path, to its completion within one year. This includes the reconstruction of lodges, distribution of energy systems, training of lodge owners, among others. The project manager can be a person from Nepal or of another nationality.

The Project

The “Climate Trek Helambu” shall be a 50km long sustainable trekking path including accommodation, board, transportation and other services to international and national trekkers in the Helambu region northeast of Kathmandu. The project provides support for reconstruction and access to renewable energy technologies to 15 lodges in seven villages, but also to schools and health posts affected by the earthquakes in 2015.

By providing designs of earthquake resistant lodges, financial support to install renewable energy systems and to implement low impact water and waste treatment strategies as well as advice on how to provide ecologically friendly tourism services, the Climate Trek will be a leading example for sustainable tourism in Nepal and worldwide. For this, service and environmental standards have been developed that the lodge owners will need to follow.

The project was initiated jointly by atmosfair and forum anders reisen, the association of sustainable tourism providers in Germany. Local implementing partner are Samarth Nepal Market Development Program and four Nepalese travel agencies.

Your tasks

Develop a strategy, milestones and indicators for the different project components (lodge development; energy supply; school and health post support; technical and environmental training);

Prepare and conclude grant contracts between each lodge owner and atmosfair;

Establish and coordinate a loan and subsidy payment mechanism between a local bank and the lodge owners;

Select, contract, steer, monitor and control all participating service providers (e.g. engineering office, quality control officer and architects);

Coordinate and conduct the quality control of the electrification of two schools in Helambu in cooperation with a local engineering office;

Regularly monitor, evaluate and report to atmosfair about the project's progress;

Regular PR activities (e.g. write blog entries for the project website), give interviews, give trainings;

Organize and coordinate meetings with the project partners as well as external stakeholders;#

Field visits to Helambu (eventually also to Langtang) with durations of possibly 2 weeks or more.

Your profile

at least a Bachelor degree in engineering, economics, tourism or a related subject;

at least three years of work experience in the field of project management, preferably related to renewable energies, tourism and/or climate protection;

willingness and ability to move to Kathmandu, Nepal, for the entire duration of the assignment;

fluent English skills;

Nepali and/or German language skills are a plus, but no requirement;

strategic thinking;

ability to work independently, autonomously and self-organized following;

result-oriented;

coordination and delegation skills;

desired: knowledge and experience in the implementation of renewable energy systems (especially solar and biogas);

advanced software handling skills of Microsoft Office;

work experience with local communities in a rural setting and international development cooperation;

physical health: ability to visit and stay in mountainous areas up to 4000m.
