Responsibilities:
The Heavy Vehicle Mechanic 1st Class is responsible for the performing all maintenance and repairs, to include preventative maintenance inspections, oil changes and lubrication on company owned truck tractors and trailers. Also responsible for assisting in maintenance and repairs on trailer refrigeration units. Employee shall provide his / her own tools and said tools shall be in a safe and serviceable condition as determined by the Director, Fleet Maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
*
Ensure all work is accomplished in the safest manner possible.
* Change engine oil, air, oil and fuel filters / lubricate chassis components IAW normal industry standards and published checklists.
* Check all tractor and trailer systems to assure they are operational (lights, brakes, air system).
* Perform road / service calls, diagnose and make repairs to company owned truck tractors and trailers.
* Perform annual DOT vehicle safety inspections.
* Empty shop trash cans daily and clean shop as needed / directed.
* Assist fuel island personnel as required. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
*
GED or high school preferred.
* Prefer junior college, trade school or manufacture training courses in heavy vehicle repair.
* Minimum of three years verifiable experience working as a heavy vehicle mechanic.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
* Ability to fluently read, write and speak English.
* Ability and willingness to follow established safety rules and procedures.
* Extensive knowledge and experience diagnosing malfunctions, tuning, adjusting and rebuilding diesel truck engines such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit, and International.
* Extensive knowledge and experience diagnosing malfunctions, adjusting and rebuilding diesel truck manual transmissions and rear end assemblies such as Eaton Fuller, Meritor, Rockwell and Dana Spicer.
* Ability to diagnose and make minor repairs and perform services on Allison automatic transmissions.
* Extensive knowledge and experience diagnosing malfunctions, adjusting and replacing heavy truck clutch and brake assemblies.
* Extensive knowledge and experience diagnosing malfunctions, adjusting and replacing air brake parts and components, steering mechanisms and electrical systems.
* Extensive knowledge and experience diagnosing air conditioning and heating malfunctions and adjusting or replacing parts and components as required.
* Experience in and the ability to perform electric arc and oxygen / acetylene welding operations.
* Should posses a “A” CDL or be willing to obtain one within six months of hire. Must have a clean driving record. DWI convictions or “at fault” vehicular accidents within the past 5 years will be grounds for candidate disqualification. After becoming a SYSCO New Orleans employee; a DWI conviction or “at fault” vehicular accident while driving company equipment may be grounds for immediate termination.
* Ability to arrive at the scheduled start time, each scheduled day of work and complete each scheduled day of work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Seeing: Must be able to see equipment and read instructions.
* Hearing: Must be able to hear verbal interaction between associates; safety warnings.
* Standing / Walking: Must be able to walk / stand for a period of 8 hours per day
* Climbing / Stooping: Must be able to climb and stoop repeatedly over an 8 hour period.
* Lifting / Carrying: Must be able to lift a minimum of 65 pounds overhead and lift / carry 75 pounds over an 8 hour period.
* Fingering / Grasping: Must be able to manipulate hand tools and servicing equipment with both hands over an 8 hour period.
* Energy Level: Incumbent must possess a high level of energy and be capable of sustained movement in a fast paced work environment for a period of 8 hours.
