As an Enterprise Architect at JCPenney you will play a key leadership role in the development and execution of enterprise wide system and technical architecture vision and strategies. You will establish strong relationships with the business, stores and technology teams within our organization, teaching and driving improved communication of the architecture vision. This role is essential to driving the overall flexibility and scalability of the highly complicated environment of overlapping systems across the company’s business functions.

Primary Responsibilities:

• This position will provide architectural guidance to application development teams working on applications/systems/platforms.
• Work with key members of the management team to define and drive technical strategy and architectural direction for various applications and systems.
• Evaluates, recommends, and defines architecture with best-of-breed, off-the-shelf commercial and other software components.
• Review solution architectures based on established enterprise application strategy.
• Ensure architecture related processes and standards are followed and adhered.
• Define and implement architecture principles & standards to build maintainable, scalable, high performing and secured business systems.
• Development of collateral such as specific reference architectures, associate guides, and technology solution patterns for business solutions.
• Architectural and technical leadership for multi-platform mobile applications based on APIs and Web services.
• Define both cloud and on premise technology strategies and solutions that enable computers residing on the same or different systems to access and utilize enterprise data.
• Participate in setting strategic technology directions to establish near term goals for area of responsibility.
• Providing expert level of support to our teams for technology transformation and refresh initiatives.
• Partners with suppliers, architects, engineers, developers, and internal customers to provide expert guidance to project stakeholders on upcoming and innovative technologies.
• Provides specific technical expertise to solve complex problems on project specific activities.
• Creating architectural and technology roadmaps that result in stronger alignment with requirements.
• Defines the responsibilities of parties involved in the project including customers, management, project team, vendors and others affected by the project.

Core Competencies & Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or 10-15 years’ work experience, is required.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
• Strong analytical and conceptual skills, with ability to function at both the conceptual as well as detail levels
• Demonstrated ability to be a thought-leader in a team environment
• Knowledge of Application design patterns, data modeling, and service-oriented architecture.
• Experience in architecting and designing scalable, secured, high performing, easily manageable business systems
• Experience leading systems architecture and design sessions with members of applications and technology teams.
• Extensive experience in architecting and deploying web-based and web-enabled business applications, and must possess experience in distributed architectures and platforms, creating, designing for scalability and performance, and implementing large-scale customer facing capabilities
• Hands on experience with Open Stack, including understanding of the various components and architectures, key integration points, and familiarity the various open source standards a plus
• Attention to detail, results driven with focus on high quality and excellent customer service as well as the ability to multi-task.
• Ability to keep calm during a period of crisis and to provide the leadership and direction required to resolve the issue.  Can perform independently with minimal supervision and make decisions in ambiguity.
• Focus or specialty in one of the following areas of architecture:  Cloud, Performance, Security, Network, Application, Data, Integration.
• Advanced software application development skills in one or more of the following: Java, J2EE, .NET, C, C#, C++, Python, JavaScript a plus
