DESCRIPTION
The Waste Diversion Manager will draft and implement a campus plan for accomplishing diversion of solid waste from landfill according to UC Office of the President requirements and taking into account campus stakeholder needs and desires. Diversion methods may include but are not limited to reuse, recycling, composting, and other diversion and disposal technology. Of special interest are methodologies that accomplish closed loop use of resources and energy recovery.
Manage all aspects of Campus-wide Integrated Waste Management Program. Plan, organize, and coordinate all waste disposal and recycling activities and resources at UC San Diego. Establish annual goals for waste minimization and recycling, and serve as advisor and consultant to campus departments and organizations engaged in recycling programs. Supervise, direct and provide guidance to recycling staff members.
Provide counsel and discipline to staff, when necessary. Administer contracts made with waste management and recycling vendors. Work closely with Local, State and Federal government agencies to monitor and analyze changes in waste disposal and recycling industries. Lead, including providing administrative and technical support to campus Waste Minimization Advisory Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS
• College Degree with major in Business Administration, Public Administration, Environmental Science, Engineering or related degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proven experience planning and managing recycling and waste management of operational functions of a University, College, Hospital, Municipality, and/or other large commercial facility.
• Skill and experience to effectively supervise, direct, counsel and/or advise others including the ability to monitor production and quality of work.
• Demonstrated ability to provide leadership that motivates and promotes team-building, creates a positive work environment and foster the Principles of Community.
• Successful experience planning, managing and controlling program budgets. Experience researching additional funding sources to expand program objectives.
• Proven ability to define program goals and objectives, target campus audience and implement effective education and outreach strategies to expand campus involvement.
• Thorough knowledge of State and Federal Public Resource Codes related to solid waste and recycling.
• Skill in utilizing multiple resources and references and ability to interpret, apply and communicate policy information obtained. Ability proven by experience extracting, compiling, analyzing and presenting pertinent data effectively. Ability to research, develop, and write competitive grant proposal.
• Knowledge of PC computers and related software programs such as but not limited to: MS Office Suite, MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook (electronic mail), Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with people at all levels of the University and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment of individuals and groups using a variety of interpersonal skills and knowledge.
• Proven skill in exercising political discernment to be effective in a highly diverse organization. Experience to work effectively in a high-volume, multiple demand work environment. Strong organizational, problem-solving, troubleshooting, negotiating, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, written and verbal skills. Ability to build and maintain customer relationships through a professional approach in handling customer service needs and problems.
• Knowledge of and ability to instruct staff in the safe and proper operation of F250 truck; alley Cat trailer, forklift, balers and other waste management and/or recycling equipment.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• DOJ, FBI and DMV background clearances are required prior to hire.
• Must possess and maintain a valid CA driver's license; must have access to transportation.
